752697 2009-03-02 07:58:00 Hi,

I'm considering getting a netbook for uni and I was wondering how I would be able to install programs, specifically Microsoft office, on to it if it has no optical drive and without using an external one if that's possible? Thanks for any help, hopefully there's a way!:)

752698 2009-03-02 08:10:00 If you have discs-you can create "Images" of them using Imgburn then copy the image file(.iso) to a flash drive, then mount it to your netbook using MagicDisc, Daemon Tools, or any other virtual disc software.

Once you have mounted it you will see a "DVD drive" in my computer, that acts like any other dvd drive. You can mount any image files to it.

Also, have not tried it before, but their is a piece of software called "StarBurn" that allows you to access a dvd drive over a network.

It is sometimes offered on giveawayoftheday(One free piece of software every 24hrs), keep you eyes peeled:)http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/

Another option would be to get an external DVD drive off trademe for 70-100 dollars.

Or connect it to someones network, use the cd/dvd and copy the files from it to yours then install it

752702 2009-03-02 19:54:00 At home, I've rigged up an old CD drive so it's sitting in my desktop, and is plugged into my netbook via USB. However, I use DAEMON Tools when on the run (the ISOs are on an 8GB SDHC card), as I can't carry a desktop around. :p pcuser42 (130)

752705 2009-03-03 00:56:00 Hi all,

Thanks for all of your quick replies.
I have tested the USB flash drive method and it works (don't why I thought it wouldn't work) and it seems it's the best, simplest and cheapest method. Thanks again for everyone who helped.

752706 2009-03-03 03:30:00 There is a cavet with games. I have been unable to run RollerCoaster Tycoon 2 and Monopoly Tycoon from an ISO image, so it's not perfect. pcuser42 (130)
