567815 2007-07-13 00:47:00 Speedy, (or anyone else) do u think it's necessary to have a firewall when running on BB with a modem with an inbuilt firewall?

Unless you want to DMZ the ports on the modem and just use the firewall on the PC for ease of opening ports or need to monitor traffic whatever of course.

Just seems to be a bit superfluous that's all.

Cheers

567816 2007-07-13 23:26:00 I voted "Other" as well since the list left out both Linux and Mac OS X which don't need any antivirus. winmacguy (3367)
567817 2007-07-13 23:40:00 On Foxy's advice :p I went with PC Cillin . . . . .

Now hold up one little minute, I did so not advise you to go with that! Heaven forbid, people might actually believe you!

How's it going, by the way?

BTW, did ya get permission for that trip Foxster?

What the heck do I need permission for?? I ask permission from no one . ;)

If he wants to come along he's welcome - he can sit and watch the "birds" of the other kind . :p

This has been discussed ad nauseum on this forum . Unlike software firewalls, hardware firewalls do not monitor and intercept outbound traffic so without a software firewall you could have a password stealing trojan on your machine and not know about it . A software firewall gives you some control over what programs access the net and is also handy for blocking spyware, etc .

Due to all the viruses, worms, trojans and other malware and spyware that could get onto your computer you need to be able to control communications from both directions .

567819 2007-07-14 00:02:00 It also helps if you can set permissions to restrict what is able to be installed on your system without user intervention which is about the most fool proof way of keeping password stealing trojans off your system. winmacguy (3367)

567821 2007-07-14 03:50:00 Common sense and limited user permissions works well with only the ports open that you need so that no AV required, although a firewall is always a good idea to keep the hackers out. winmacguy (3367)
567822 2007-07-14 04:56:00 Don't run any AV, theres an old P2 running Smoothwall sitting under the sofa next to the modem that does a good job in tandem with a little common sense. Pete O'Neil (6584)

No AV required and just regular surfing with OS X. Just plug in a play.
