752993 2009-03-03 08:02:00 Wain -When I’ve got to the Computer Management Window I can’t see any “local users and groups” option – all I’ve got in the middle pane is 3 icons for System Tools, Storage and Services &Applications. I actually haven’t set up any users – when the computer starts it just goes straight to the desktop there is no login screen. Does this mean that I’m already in the REAL administrator account?
Sorry my mistake (no you are in your account) - Forgot to mention expand system tools on th left ( I do it out of habit) Location (www.imagef1.net.nz) - when you open the user accounts you will see two 1.Guest 2. your account, when you enable the real administrator account , you should get the choice to log in to your account or the Admin.

I'd suggest once in the Admin account, go to Computer, right click the C: Drive/properties/tools Check Now - check the system files, you may find it already ticked, normally it says some to the effect , cant check because drives in use, do you want to scan on reboot - select Yes - reboot and you will see chkdsk running - dont stop it ( it may take a while) when finished it will carry on booting, log in to your account. Once the PC is fixed you can disable the Admin account by doing the same thing from your account, but put the tick back - reboot.

752994 2009-03-03 08:06:00 I’ve run the scannow suggestion in Safe Mode and it didn’t thro up any messages – just went thru to 100%

Is it OK to do the Winsock business in safe mode or shall I restart?

752995 2009-03-03 08:10:00 Yep-should run fine in safe mode Blam (54)
752996 2009-03-03 08:21:00 Err blam - not being picky - but you cant assume the routers gateway is 192.168.1.1, since it has not been mentioned what router is being used.

There are several it could be, as well, 192.168.2.1 or 10.1.1.1 or 192.168.0.1, while setting a static IP if fine, its better to set the obtain automatically until you either find out the routers IP or if you Know it. If its set to the wrong IP it wont work as you know ;)

I've got 3 new routers in the workshop for different jobs next week, all have different gateways.

752997 2009-03-03 08:28:00 I said usually192.168.1.1

And I know that whatever is causing this has disabled the DHCP service, therefore that is why she/he cannot access the internet.

Setting a static IP will enable him/her to access the internet to download programs needed

752998 2009-03-03 08:44:00 I know you said "usually" but I disagree that its "Usually" - I have worked on about 10 different routers over the last two weeks, and the only 1 that has the IP of 192.168.1.1 is my own.

It would have been better to suggest "find out the routers gateway address" then enter in (what ever it is).

752999 2009-03-03 08:49:00 To assign a manual IP>Go to network & sharing center>Click "Manage network Connections" on left hand side>Right click wireless adapter>properties>Double click IPv4>Set IP to 192.168.1.4, Subnet mask to 255.255.255.0, Default gateway to Ip address of router(usually 192.168.1.1)also set DNS to 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220

I did put that, I just suggested that it could be 192.168.1.1

Overall, from the few routers I've setup, 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.1.1 seem most common for me.

You probably have more experience, as you are a pc tech, but I certainly am not.

753000 2009-03-03 08:55:00 One thing in the IT game - never assume anything - it will bite ya in the backside one day, esp when working with networks.

FYI- Belkin routers, every one I have dealt with has the gateway of 192.168.2.1

753001 2009-03-03 09:08:00 Here’s where we’re at:

Wain – when I followed your revised set of instructions “Local Users and Groups” was not between "Shared Folders" and "Reliability and Performance" as in your illustration – got any idea why?

Anyway, I ran the Winsock thing and Voila! It seems to have fixed things!, so accolades to Speedy for pointing it out first!

I ran CHKDSK and that didn’t return any errors so “So far so Good”

You guys are legends! – thanks for all your time and trouble – and stop the squabbling!

PS Thank God I didn’t have to go thru all the IP Address malarkey
PPS This is coming from the “fixed” computer
