567360 2007-07-09 21:34:00 If you can, buy a laser that includes a new drum as part of the toner unit.

In the past I have had poor economies with cheap lasers, where the drum was not automatically included within the toner unit, after a year the drum needed replacing and then the cost was within $30 of a new printer. One was Brother and one was Panasonic. Ended up giving them away when they were only just a year old.

So I bought a laser that used a "drum+toner" refill, and its still as good as the day I bought it. I do have a throughput of 20,000+ pages a year though, possibly more than you.
This is purely because they are there and not having to replace colours etc.

This looks good if providing say 1000 pages a year.

Don't know about the drum business.

567361 2007-07-09 21:36:00 I have used HP for years, first a 6L then a 1200. I do a lot of printing, but toner lasts so long it comes as a surprise when I have to replace it. Reliability has been great.

Bought a 5L off TM for $12 a while back for a special job that needed to print from DOS. I had an aftermarket cartridge that wasn't the best quality so I put my old 6L cartridge in (been lying in the garage for years) and it was printing like a new one.

567362 2007-07-09 21:41:00 Just don't buy a new HP laser. Currently at work we have a Laserjet 2600N and it sucks big time!!!

It's slow, costly and has random fit's of 'printer maintenance' which sucks out the toner.

PriceSpy is your friend Ciccy. $156 upwards depending on where you buy. 1000ppy is nothing, at that rate the printer will take years to need another cartridge.

Don't let BD's comment put you off, one commercial-use laser with a problem doesn't taint the entire range. Also, what's slow in a commercial environment can seem blazingly fast at home, especially after using inkjets.

Perhaps they should get HP to fix or replace it.

Somehow I hate inkjets because of ink clog problems. Especially with all budget Lexmark budget printers.

Inkjet use more ink and cost more to replace. Look at Laser 2000-3000 pages only pay $100 to replace that toner. And inkjet? Color + Black = $100+.

$138 ex Noel Leeming.
$100 to replace ink, told this will do a 1000 pages.
I have set it at its lowest quality,so should get at least 40% more.

I use to print articles,as apposed to sitting and reading on computer.

If this unit lasts for 12 months, seems to be cheap printing.

And who knows what will be available then.
