| 753117 | 2009-03-03 23:54:00 | Hey everyone. I'm in need of some urgent assistance here. I was selecting a few options in the program "GhostSurf", when a few moments later, my computer abruptly shut off. I re-started it and received the forthcoming error message: "Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM" It then instructs me to insert the original set-up CD-ROM and click "R" to repair. I don't have the original set-up CD-ROM for Windows XP Home Edition in my possession, owing to the fact that that my computer came with it already installed. So, I simply went ahead and purchased a new one at the store, thinking I was ok because the original product key was still on a sticker located on the side of my computer box. I inserted it into my computer, and everything appeared to be running smoothly, when as it began to finally run Windows, I received the following error message: "The application or DLL C:\WINDOWS\system32\SHSVCS.dll is not a valid Windows image. Please check this against your installation diskette." I don't know how to possibly "check this against my installation diskette" - or what that even means, precisely - so I simply click "OK". Nothing happens. The entire screen is black. I can't even turn off my computer by pressing the "ON/OFF" button on the box. I have to unplug it and re-plug it in again. I'm extremely frustrated and perplexed. I haven't the vaguest notion of what to do. I don't want to lose all my data. Assistance would be greatly valued as soon as plausible. And for whatever its worth, my computer is a Dell Dimension 2400. Thanks, Citizen |

This is the SECOND option when you boot off the CD - the first R for Recovery Console or Enter to Intsall, you choose enter, then it asks R for Repair or do a fresh install. |

Insert and boot from your WindowsXP CD. 2. At the first R=Repair option, press the R key 3. Press the number that corresponds to the correct location for the installation of Windows you want to repair. Typically this will be #1 4. Enter in the administrator password when requested 5. cd \windows\system32\config 6. Depending on which section was corrupted: ren software software.bad or ren system system.bad 7. Depending on which section was corrupted copy \windows\repair\system copy \windows\repair\software 8. Take out the CD ROM and type exit |
