752791 2009-03-02 20:47:00 Have searched the forums, but can't seem to find any previous posts on this (do forgive me if I've missed one);
We have Telstra cable broadband at home, which is connected to a PC (internet works fine this way). Have been trying to set it up to go through a Linksys Wireless-G router to no avail. (Setup was modem->router->PC, all wired.) Have tried setting PC to "obtain IP automatically", can ping the router and modem from the computer, but can't access (a) the internet or (b) the router settings (through \\192.168.1.1). I've tried doing a factory reset on the router as well, tried assigning an IP on the computer, tried assigning a gateway for the computer, I just can't seem to figure it out.

Have used the same router on Telstra cable before and had zero problems with it. Router works fine - has been tested recently - and have tried connecting with two different computers, one on XP and one on Vista. The Vista one seemed to think it was something to do with a firewall somewhere, but the computers don't have firewalls active when I'm trying to set all this up.

I'm at a loss as to what it might be which is stopping it working. Does the router need a firmware upgrade? (Or an exorcism?) Am I doing something wrong in my setup?

Any help is appreciated... :thanks

752792 2009-03-02 21:06:00 Have you tried resetting the browser/using another browser?
To reset IE>Tools>Options>advanced>Reset

Erases all history and cache and saved passwords also.

Have you tried running WinSockFIx?

BTW Welcome to PF1:)

Hey Blam, thanks for the welcome :)

I've tried it in IE on one computer, Firefox and Windows Explorer in the other computer, both say it can't find \\192 . 168 . 1 . 1 .

Haven't tried WinSock thingy because I'm not sure what it is . . . :waughh:

Don't jump to the winsock fix too quickly . . . as there are other things you need to try first .

1) Unplug your router from your modem, so that the only things plugged into it is the power cable, and the network cable going between the router and your PC .

2) Manually set your PC's ip address to something like: 192 . 168 . 1 . 10, netmask 255 . 255 . 255 . 0 gateway 192 . 168 . 1 . 1

3) Try to browse to the router's admin page: http://192 . 168 . 1 . 1 (usually) .

He/she has already tried settings a static IP and is sure the problem lies within the router/pc configuration as she has already tried other pcs...

Download WinsockFix here, run it, then restart when prompted:

The OP was trying to navigate to \\192.168.1.1, rather than the URL in their browser http://192.168.1.1

Blam, I dont mean to be rude mate, but you cant just jump on hear repeating what other users have said because it worked for another user. IT fault diagnostics doesnt work that way.

The reason it isnt working is DNS.....

I really appreciate everyone's responses to this (not so much the one about the clock but that may be a bot?) - will try doing this tonight and see how we go with that!

I wasn't repeating what other users have said, I personally use winsockfix frequently myself, and I find it a very useful tool. Sorry if I'm wrong about this, but all I try to do on this forum is help other users.

Personally I'm not the most advanced user on pf1, nor the one with the most knowledge. I learn every time I visit this forum, and I share my learnt knowledge to other users.

752800 2009-03-03 05:04:00 Start from the Beginning - Reset the router to factory defaults . ( plug in the modem> Router in the WAN port)

With the router connected to your XP PC, check its getting an address;
Click start/Run type in cmd,<enter> when the window opens, type in ipconfig you should get a list of settings, with the gateway prob saying 192 . 168 . 1 . 1 and the IP address 192 . 168 . 1 . X with x being a random number .

if you get that - close the cmd box .

In your browser ( use IE) type in http://192 . 168 . 1 . 1 ( or what ever the gateway address was) .

Under the setup page, internet access - make sure you set the internet connection to static .

Under IP address type in what ever your Ip from telstra is .

Example:

IP Address 123 . 456 . 12 . 47 <<<---Example only
Subnet Mask 255 . 255 . 255 . 0 <<---- thats what you use
Default gateway 123 . 456 . 12 . 1 << note same as IP except it has a 1

Use the following DNS settings for telstra .

DNS Servers 203 . 96 . 152 . 4
203 . 96 . 152 . 12

It will look something Like this ( . imagef1 . net . nz/files/WAN . jpg" target="_blank">www . imagef1 . net . nz) - I've blanked out my IP, and use a different router but its basically the same .

Save settings, the router will reboot - Once its rebooted, may take a minute or two, as long as the PC is set to obtain automatically you "should" have a working Internet connection, as long as you set the firewall to accept the full range from the router Eg: 192 . 168 . 1 . 1 to 192 . 168 . 1 . 255 .

IF not its exorcism time :nerd:
