567024 2007-07-08 10:17:00 I'm looking at buying a new car because my 1300cc Mitzi Mirage is a bit weak - especially when I have to go out to a farmer's house & get stuck behind a slow vehicle. I'm thinking about 1800cc is the power I need.

Are there any cars in particular I should avoid? Do you have any general car buying advice for me?

I'm looking at a Toyota Curren on trademe, but $6500 seems a bit steep. What do you think it is worth? www.trademe.co.nz

567025 2007-07-08 10:26:00 We bought a 60000km Nissan Cefiro recently. It's a really good car for about $4000 or so. You can get it cheaper if it has higher kms, maybe around 100000.

It has a 2L V6 engine.

567027 2007-07-08 10:43:00 what year is the your mirage?

1998. It is a fairly nice 2 door (wouldn't touch the hatch version) with all the safety & comfort features but it has no power & i find that quite frustrating.

With southland being southland, whoever I buy a car off is probably going to know my family. I bought my mirage off a school teacher last year & found out she was a friend of my uncle's & he had imported it for her

There usually isn't too much traffic on the roads down here during working hours.

567028 2007-07-08 11:10:00 Just brought myself a 98 corolla wagon with 196000km. NZ new, It's been one of the companys run abouts, so I know the history. And at 3 grand it was a bargain. I will say it again Toyota=bullet proof plod (107)

You're not a bit of a boy racer are you Greven?
Weak??

Stuck behind slow vehicles?

How often would that happen? I know what traffic is like down here . Virtually non-existent .

If you are refering to the odd tractor or such they always pull over for you .

567030 2007-07-08 22:51:00 Nissan Primera 98 - 02 is an excellent car - performs well, handles well - NZ assembled so no problem for parts at the right price - could be dearer than the Corolla, which is definitely a bomb proof model. Mitzi Lancer 1.8 manual handles and goes well, also definitely worth considering. The more exotic Jap imports can prove pricey on parts - steer clear of Jap imports with Turbos - if the turbo dies, and they are at risk if the vehicle has not been properly maintained, you are up for big money. I'm certainly not a boy racer, but I like having enough power to pass someone if I want, and be able to handle the hills on the odd occasion I leave the flat ground of Southland.

The curren I'm looking at looks like a bit of a boy racer car, but I don't thrash my cars like the idiot boy racers do.

The Primeras are quite fuel hungry aren't they, or is that the maximas I'm thinking of?

567032 2007-07-08 23:13:00 I'd get a Cefiro over the Curren anyday! SolMiester (139)
