569747 2007-07-17 12:06:00 Could someone please add the following to a daily cronjob on the PressF1 server:
ntpdate -u pool.ntp.orgIt's incredibly simple, will take all of a minute, and will stop the incessant moaning about the forum time being wrong.

569748 2007-07-17 12:21:00 And to fix the problem of the forum clock been wrong while your log off e.g. "All times are GMT +13. The time now is 12:20 AM." Is a simple time change in the vBulletin admin. stu161204 (123)

Better to use:

ntpdate -bu nz.pool.ntp.org for manual resets and cron. For automatic time corrections, it is better to use the newer and better ntpd.

569751 2007-07-17 13:09:00 Better to use:

ntpdate -bu nz . pool . ntp . org for manual resets and cron . For automatic time corrections, it is better to use the newer and better ntpd . Good point . Omitting -b can cause the occasional program to crash, especially if setting the clock backwards .

To admins: If using ntpd, please remember to configure it!! It won't 'just work' out of the box as there is no default timeserver set .

Edit: At least, in Debian there isn't a default server set . As the PressF1 server runs Fedora, I don't know for certain .

569752 2007-07-17 15:44:00 Can't the site just post the Julian date and forget the time? That should be correct at least for a few hours each day. SurferJoe46 (51)

Hello Jan . :p

Changing the time with ntpdate or ntpd requires admin priviledges for the server . Some hardened Linux servers (this forum is run on Fedora Core) prohibit the changing of the time by more than a few milliseconds at a time and will require a bit of fiddling . ntpd does also require a re-read of init - this would require a restart of everything on the server - including the webserver . PCWorld may have a few other things on the server they do not want to make unavailable .

So it is not a trivial undertaking .
