China debones "World of Warcraft"::eek:

As highlighted (edit/redacted) yesterday, China is home to about 137 million Internet users, and that number will grow to surpass the number in the U . S . in just a few years .

But until things change, there really needs to be an asterisk next to any estimate of Chinese users, because they are not seeing the same Net as the rest of us .

The latest example? Amid a government campaign to "curb the spread of decadent and backward ideological and cultural material online," the operators of the Chinese "World of Warcraft" franchise will remove all skeleton characters in the multiplayer game, replacing them with fully intact human figures .

News agency Xinhua also reported that skeletal remains on the ground would henceforth be rendered as graves .

According to Xinhua, the backlash consists of 500 players who have promised to boycott the game; a successful protest is deemed unlikely .

And now is not a good time to be presenting yourself as an online stock guru in China .

Blogger Wang Xiujie, known to his readers as "Big Brother Leader 777," posed James Bond-style in a photo on his site and described himself as a professional investor in stocks, bonds, postage stamps and antiques offering instant-message stock advice that had a 90 percent accuracy rate .

Thousands subscribed as China's markets boomed, but while such characters are ubiquitous on our Net, China has a campaign (China always has a campaign) to eradicate the freelance tipsters .

Wang has been detained and could face charges of running an unlicensed business and illegally raising funds .

If he's lucky, they won't remove his skeleton . :D
