Jumping off a wharf and opening my eyes underwater to find that i was face to face with a shark, i was up the barnacle encrusted wharf piling faster than greased lightning, (turned out the shark was dead and tied to the Wharf, but i only found that out afterwards, i wasn't exactly going to try and take the sharks pulse), but just for a few seconds there was this incredible elation at being alive
Giving my son back to my Wife - I know others think the birth of the child is cool etc, but my biggest thrill was giving the baby back to my wife, without dropping him or breaking him

568554 2007-07-17 03:22:00 If sex is out, then:

1. Seeing two of my kids being born - one in the labour room bed without any health professionals present (they said "oh, you'll be ages yet" and left us alone).

2. Chopper flights in South Westland - one around the Franz and Fox neves; the other involved landing at the head of a mighty Westland river. Chopper takeoffs and landings are almost better than sex...

3. A couple of scuba dives where I was so smashed by the experience (without the assistance of mind altering substances) I remember clearly thinking 'If I go any deeper than this, I ain't coming back". Grooving so much on the sea life around us, the two of us wouldn't consider picking up any of the crays, and being outraged when someone else did - it seemed to brutalise the ultimate peaceful experience (true, no wacky backy involved).

4. Times on the motorbike when I pushed it to far and nearly crashed - avoiding the messiness leaves you on a heart pounding, mind numbing high...

5. Tramping trips in the Alps - on one, I remember thinking "if there was a god, this is where it would be".

6. As a teenager, being on a beach as the sun came up, and watching dolphins surfing in big turquoise rollers, silhouetted against the rising sun.

7. On the same occasion, helping save a wee kid who had an epileptic seizure in the surf, and who needed resuscitation - no parents supervising him and his smaller sister.

Ain't it great to be alive?

568555 2007-07-17 04:23:00 I've had a few others I didn't mention .

Putting my fingers into "sucking wounds" of GIs being helo'd out to the hospital ship Repose, me with my fingers in their chest to plug up the bullet holes so they could breathe until they got medical help . That was in VietNam .

Arriving at an auto accident and decapitation as I was the first tow truck driver on the scene, watching the paramedics deliver a near full term baby from the headless mother . The baby survived .

568556 2007-07-17 05:10:00 Another one - driving home late on a nasty rainy night, probably going a bit faster than I should have been as I had to get up early for work the next morning (no excuse, I know ). Anyway, coming aroung a narrow corner, there was a large slip covering my half of the road. No worries there, just swerve around it. Only hitch was, there was a vehicle coming the other way too. The driver of the other car saw the prediciment I was in, braked accordingly and moved as far as possible to the left side of the road (which wasn't really that far). I managed to slow down to about 50kph without locking up the wheels (pre ABS), and swerved between the slip and the other car. Covered my car in mud, dented the front bumber, broke the headlight cover and put scratches down the left side of the car from hitting the edge of the slip, but both me and the driver of the other car were alive. There can't have been more than a few inches between our wing mirrors when we passed though. That sure got the adrenaline pumping.

Glad I was insured too. Good 1.5k worth of damage to the car, alomst 1/4 of that in fixing the headlight?? Go figure.
