570335 2007-07-22 04:54:00 lol well the Phillips DVD I brought a few yrs ago cost over 1000.

It doesnt play + or - dvds either, DVD's I burn.

But the stereo here, which was $150 cheaper, plays anything u chuck in it.

So, its not only cheap dvd players that wont play + or - dvd's.

true enough, but for the last couple of years all "name brand" DVD players have supported +/- disks, one you've had for a while is not a good comparison.
They tend to put it on the player and box as a feature these days - just try and find one without +/- rw support

Well quite a players wont play RW's either.

Most probably because theyre rewritable. Or its the way data / whatever is burned to them.

Thats why its better to use + or -. Not RW.

570338 2007-07-22 07:54:00 Perhaps what is wanted for the gift is a portable DVD player .

A computer is not a portable DVD player, and a bit expensive for something which "also" plays DVD movies as well as doing what it is meant for . A TV with built-in DVD is not a portable DVD player .

Why hasn't someone suggested a car with a built-in DVD player?
Yeah, you are right to point out that built-in DVD player TVs are not portable DVD players . :p

Having said so, mejobloggs pointed out that his / her (trying to be PC) grandparents don't even have a TV in the first place, and therefore he / she might as well get a set that have both the function of playing DVDs and displaying TV channels .

Anyway, thanks for bringing us back to the main topic of this thread . :D (No sarcasm meant)

Cheers :)
