755162 2009-03-10 02:23:00 The port for I.R.C. is bl0cked at school.
I have found a web I.R.C program (CGI:IRC) to use on my website, but it doesn't connect to the IRC Server, it has this error:

*** Welcome to CGI:IRC 0.5.9 (2006/06/06)
*** Looking up <IRC Server>
*** Connecting to <IRC SERVER> [<IP>] port 6667
*** An error occurred: Connecting to IRC: Connection timed out (60 seconds)

What is the problem?

755163 2009-03-10 02:31:00 Thats probably why, the ports are blocked.

It wont matter what you try to connect to IRC. It wont work

Its blocked for a reason

755164 2009-03-10 02:33:00 But.. Wouldn't I be connecting to the Website via the normal port, and then the Website connects to the IRC server Over the IRC port?
Or am i wrong.

755165 2009-03-10 02:34:00 Pass, if the school has blocked the main port, it probably doesnt matter, how it connects Speedy Gonzales (78)
755166 2009-03-10 02:37:00 But isn't it the Website that uses the port? esayolay (13857)
755167 2009-03-10 03:15:00 if its been blocked its been blocked for a reason - and if they catch you trying to circumvent the measures they have put in place id have to guess you would get in some very hot water

you should be doing schoolwork not IRC in class :waughh:

755168 2009-03-10 03:32:00 Basically CGI:IRC (AFAIK) is just a web client, much the same as if you downloaded mIRC to your PC.

You'd need to have something actually do the initiation for you and it sounds like this wont do it.

In a nutshell, unless you're clever enough to create an ssh tunnel to your home or VPN (Provided VPN / SSH arent blocked also) then you're probably fresh out of luck ;)

755169 2009-03-10 05:02:00 Hmm.. I Dunno..
Here's something i found in the readme:

CGI:IRC is a Perl/CGI program that lets you access IRC from a web browser, it
is designed to be flexible and has many uses such as an IRC gateway for an IRC
network, a chat-room for a website or to access IRC when stuck behind a
restrictive firewall.

I'm behind a restrictive firewall!

755170 2009-03-10 05:52:00 Well yer a firewall that you dont have access to / control of

Forget it

If you want IRC use it at home

755171 2009-03-11 00:36:00 If you're on a shared web-server, it'll probably be locked down to prevent outbound IRC connections, as IRC is commonly used if a server is compromised to control malicious code. Your web-host would be able to confirm if that was the case.
