2009-03-09 08:19:00 | Hi all, A while back I posted about having misplaced my original Win XP Professional CD. Original post here: pressf1.pcworld.co.nz (This is legitimate, I have my original serial number, but have just misplaced my disc). I object to paying MS $50 for a copy, and none of my friends have the full version on disc that I can copy. I haven't worried about it too much up until now as I've been overseas for work, but I'm back home again shortly and would like to get this done. Is there anyone on the forum who would be willing to make a CD copy of their Win XP Pro disc, and post it to me? Obviously I'd be happy to pay for materials and postage... Thanks!

2009-03-09 08:52:00 | If you object to paying Microsoft for a replacement for $50.00 then I would think that you would object to paying for anything. Ever heard of shareware fillet steaks. Tried the steak but I lost it and I want a refund. Your mistake that you no longer have the CD. Was it lent to a person? Did you ever forget to do an oil change and the vehicle died as a result? I have a legal copy of win XP pro which I no longer use as I now use Vista. Mine is the 64 bit version so may not be useful to you.

2009-03-09 09:16:00 | Bob_doe - pretty sure it was off the shelf version. And I forgot to mention before, 32bit version. Sweep - not quite sure of your analogies there? I'm not trying to rip off anyone... Yes, it was my fault - I put a lot of my stuff into storage a while back and I think the original CD must have accidentally got packed away somewhere it shouldn't. Despite looking everywhere I can't find it. I don't think I lent it to someone, so it's just my fault for misplacing it. In this case, I was advised it's perfectly legal to get a copy of the CD (as long as I have my own original CD key, which I do) - in fact that's what a number of other people on the forum advised me to do. Unfortunately none of my friends have the disc that's why I posted again. So why would I pay $50 to MS when there seem to be cheaper, alternative, legal way of getting it? And that's why I offered to cover anyone's costs for doing it too. If there's no-one who can help, that's okay - thought it was worth trying

2009-03-09 09:27:00 | There is one big problem - unlike XP home, XP Pro can be very fussy about what CD to COA it uses. I have at last count 7 (or more) Different XP Pro CD's, some are OEM some are Retail or upgrades, some are Pre SP1, SP1 or SP2 etc. The product key from One OEM may not work on another - there has been many times I have had to go by trial and error with customers PC's that have the COA but no CD to get the right CD/COA to match. Normally by installing XP Pro on a small drive of 6 -10GB so it doesn't take ages to format and try the customers COA - if it accepts it, great- on to the main drive - if not - try another CD & start again, sooner or later one will work.

2009-03-09 09:58:00 | Chikara. Please accept my apology which I offer without reservation. So often I see people who have misplaced CDs and want me to fix the PC and do not supply me with the relevant motherboard drivers which means I have to spend more time to find out what is going on. Others have used advice published on various forums and followed advice given which may be misleading. Like this forum for example where some people insist that you should not have a windows O/S and install Linux instead.

2009-03-09 10:08:00 | WT - thanks for the reply. Didn't realise it was as complicated as that! Mine would be the original pre-SP1 version, as I got it when Win XP first came out (And I'm still running the same Athlon 1400 system!!) My system is actually still running fine, I just accidentally uninstalled a windows component so I needed the CD to reinstall it. Maybe I'll just have to hold off until I get a new system probably later this year and hope I don;t need the CD for anything else meanwhile (and hopefully Win 7 will be available by then!) Meanwhile I'll keep looking, or just have to bite the bullet and pay MS the $50. Sweep - no problems. Just didn't want you to think I was ripping anyone off or doing anything illegal. Thanks
