| 571076 | 2007-07-21 14:29:00 | I've fractured a couple of ribs and the pain is really bad, specially when I move, breathe too deeply, sneeze, yawn or cough. Anyone got any tips on how to ease the pain? I cracked a couple of ribs a few years ago and the doc said there was no treatment - just time, so I haven't bothered going back this time. |

Get it as wide as possible, I use the ones that are about 10 inches wide . I break ribs every once in a while and with a few aspirin (NSAIDs are best) and the ACE Bandage, it works as well as can be expected . Topically applied analgesics are pretty useless . . . . . ie: pastes made from rat feces, balms of rendered protein, potions of emu livers' aloe vera jells, tonics and most anything organic . Try to stay away from heat-generating plasters too . . . they are just forms of acetylsalicylic acid which you should not use if you also use any aspirin products for pain control . Combined they are really hard on the liver to get hit from two sources of the close to the same chemical . Just time will finalize it all . . and it can take a long time if you keep on re-aggravating them . Don't cough, sneeze, belch, stretch to reach things, carry any weight more than the clothes you are wearing and roll out of bed . . don't just sit up! I break mine just getting out of bed some times . Next time, stay out of unfriendly bars and pubs . Send me $25 USD in the mail . |

Consult your local pharmacist - it won't cost you anything for a friendly chat with him or her! Cheers :) |

| 571084 | 2007-07-21 21:35:00 | Hey Greg - commiserations!! My ribs (5) are still pretty sore too. I'm taking Panadol every four hours and an opiate (prescribed) to get me through the night. Certainly, stay away from anything that will make you sneeze or constipated (sorry for the drop in 'tone' there, but it had to be said!) and stop reading Billy's Monday Laughs. But force yourself to deep breathe. It will be six weeks or so before you heal (so I'm told), although you might speed it up some by drinking herbal tea with rosehip in it. Healtheries do an "Exotic Fruits with Orange, Rosehip and Raspberry". Apparently rosehip has lots of vitamin C and that helps calcium absorption. You might need to throw a teaspoon of nice manuka honey into that tea too - depending on the sweetness of you 'tooth'... | johcar (6283) | ||
| 571085 | 2007-07-21 21:39:00 | Also, despite there being no real treatment for the ribs (sorry Joe, constriction bandages are out of favour these days), you might want the doc to check you out anyway (you should be covered under ACC), because you may have put a small puncture in your lung (I did), which could lead to pneumonia... | johcar (6283) | ||
