570681 2007-07-25 18:39:00 Let the damn thing float where it wants and damn the whingers. Will make my holiday to Oz all the cheaper anyway.

That is not a very good attitude 12volts ! I do not know what you do for a living, but every country has to be able to sell goods and services overseas to be able to buy goods and services from overseas.

So for you to be able to buy an overseas made computer (to read this) or to go to OZ for your holiday NZ has had to earn that much overseas currency !

So if all the exporters go broke and close down and all those workers have no jobs will you be happy to pay their dole ?

Exporters cannot cope with such a widely fluctuating dollar such as ours has been over the last 20 years. So I think the Reserve bank's target should be changed to keep our dollar around about the same as a basket of the major currencies.

Inflation will look after itself.

570682 2007-07-25 23:37:00 I just hope to see the day when NZ$1=US$1 or even NZ$1=US$0.90

Althought either of the above is extremely unlikey or even out of the question, when it does happen i just hope to scoop all the NZ $$ sitting in NZ into US funds.

Anyone who does currency investment, now is probably the prime moment o buy tons of US$$ and then when NZ market crashes, cash it out again in NZ$$. Dont think that US$ might be worth nothing in future and carries risks
US$ is a major benchmark so it virtually cant go into default in anyway (at least in our lifetime)

Yes there is the possibility that NZ$ might not come back down, but looking at the size of NZ and its economy, it simply aint sustainable long term to have NZ$ trade at those levels.

If you are a exporter, i feel for you.
