572154 2007-07-25 04:17:00 You are asking us but you don't tell the main use of your PC?

For all we know it could be hard gaming in which the 8800 would be the best upgrade... Or it could be mass video editing which would be the Quad core... but almost any (if not all) CPUs these days is better than a CELERON!! :p
Hehe to be honest I hardly do anything intensive with my PC. My cravings for a powerful PC is just a hobby. I still run benchmarks like 3Dmark06 and that, and play a reasonably intensive game (B&W2) occasionally, but to be honest I can live with even a single core PC with an X1600.

It sounds like the majority of the masses wants me to go E6850, but I was advised by a techie guy to go for the Q6600 and overclock it to 2.9GHz. He told me the Q6600 can easily do that on stock voltage and cooler.

But I'm still awaiting more votes. :)

Pedal: do you think I need to to upgrade my PSU? I don't know, this PSU can supposedly deliver up to 360W of +12v power.

Pctek: yeah, I'm also longing for a high-end 8800 card. But I don't know how long my crappy 3.6GHz D can last for until upcoming games require 3GHz minimum speed....

572155 2007-07-25 06:20:00 The PSU will be fine and your techie guy was right 2.9GHz should be easily obtainable. Don't even consider the E6850! Pete O'Neil (6584)

2.9Gz Q6600 on stock volts and HSF, i'd like to see that:lol:

I think more exoctic cooling is required for B3 stepping Q6600, it runs hot stock period.

TBH if you are going to spend money on something powerful then IMHO you MUST use it to its full potential... Like my 8800, it is gamed on most days for a few hours... (but then I do need to get a life outside of work and gaming... :groan: :help: )

And having a powerful PC and not using it to its full potential is a waste of money IMO

That is just my :2cents:

I completely agree with you. Even my current PC now is rarely used to its full potential.

Computer hardware is like my crack at times. You don't need it, and it's a waste of money.
