755117 2009-03-10 01:49:00 I am thinking of getting an ipod touch, for checking my email and surfing the website via wifi, while I am away from my desk. It would be used for business purposes, so I want to buy it through my business. Does anyone know whether this would be frowned upon by the inland revenue. Essentially it is just a PDA or miniture computer, however becuase it is called an 'ipod' I am thinking that it could be questioned as to whether it is a business purchase. Is anyone able to tell me if it would be an allowable business expense, or if anyone else has purchased one through their business? TIA robbyp (2751)
755118 2009-03-10 02:11:00 It all depends on the intended use - if you are buying it to use as a PDA, then of course you can claim it as a business expense (and this is a pretty common use for them too). IRD would have no issue with this.

It's only when you start claiming purely personal purchases that IRD will become unhappy.

The only issue I think is that the receipt will show 'ipod' which is known as a music device, which I am sure my accountant would question too, but I guess it will be fine when I explain it to them. robbyp (2751)
755120 2009-03-10 03:34:00 Yeah, but that said there's nothing as far as Im aware to prevent you from buying an iPod to listen to Podcasts (for example) if they relate to your business and the device is primarily being used for that.

That said, I would *highly* recommend the iPod Touch, great little device! I got one for my fiance for Christmas after she kept nicking my iPhone for games amongst other things, she loves it too :)
