573215 2007-07-27 06:38:00 Sky tv are switching off their satellite for four hours to switch polarity this tuesday some of you may have already received a letter in the mail about it like i did today.

SKY Television Maintenance Tuesday 31st July 2007.

All SKY’s digital channels will be off the air from 01:00 am for a period of up to four hours on Tuesday 31 July 2007.

To ensure that customers receive maximum benefit from the new D1 satellite, SKY is making a modification to the way in which the satellite dish receives information from the satellite. There will be a temporary loss of programming on SKY’s digital service while this work is being carried out.

Currently SKY’s services are transmitted on vertical polarity. This modification involves switching the polarity of the satellite receivers from vertical to horizontal polarity. This modification will deliver increased satellite capacity, allowing SKY to look at more satellite transponders, ensuring that customers will receive maximum benefit from the switch to the new satellite.

573216 2007-07-28 03:47:00 Do you think that they may increase the bitrate to something close to Freeview or are we still going to be stuck the present low bitrate?? paulw (1826)
573217 2007-07-28 06:17:00 Does that mean that you will be able to use a Sky decoder and Freeview receiver at the same time on the one dish? CYaBro (73)
573218 2007-07-28 06:28:00 If I've learned anything from Dr Who and Star Trek, reversing the polarity should mean one dish, increased bitrate, more powerful phasers, the ability to hack into the Borg, and the capability to heal a rip in the space-time continuum. mmmork (6822)
573219 2007-07-28 07:38:00 This change will allow sky to broadcast freeview as this is the software they were waiting on to do that. Hitech (9024)
573220 2007-07-28 11:14:00 What's the point of them broadcasting freeview??
Don't they already broadcast all the freeview channels?
CYaBro (73)
573221 2007-07-28 22:27:00 No they only broadcast tv1 tv2 tv3 theirs more freeview channels they can show like the v8 supercars channel and tvnz6 which starts in two months etc theirs more to come yet. Hitech (9024)
573222 2007-07-29 01:07:00 So if you have a sky decoder with the free-to-air channels "decoder rental" for $18.95 per month will that include all the FreeView channels? CYaBro (73)
573223 2007-07-29 10:16:00 not sure ring sky and ask them. Hitech (9024)
573224 2007-07-30 00:06:00 Apologies for taking this slightly off topic, but rather than ring Sky's "customer service" line and getting fobbed off with rubbish, I thought I would quickly ask here.

I noticed on Friday that I was not receiving the Documentary Channel or Fox News Channel (I get a Name Server Error). As I was away for the weekend I assumed it was a short term thing. Returned home yesterday and find that those channels still give the same error. Is anybody else missing any channels or is it time for a Sky tech to call on me?
