| 573566 | 2007-07-30 07:32:00 | As far as I know there are no sites I want to replicate . I want my site to be a user-friendly way for customers to design their own computer without needing any technical knowledge (other than knowing what memory is, what hard drives are, etc), while still having complete control over the components that go into the system . It needs to be impossible for them to design an impossible system, or one that would work poorly (ie, no QX6800s with a 300W PSU, no DDR2-800 RAM in a motherboard that doesn't support it, etc . The process will be in a 'wizard' format, with customers customising an aspect of the computer at each step . The wizard will give recommendations at each step to help the customer build a well-rounded PC (as opposed to putting 4GB of RAM into a PC with a E4300, for example) . If they want to, they can, but the site will suggest that it is not a good idea (or at least recommend 1GB) . A user of the site should not need to do anything other than choose an amount of memory, hard drive space, and a CPU to build a computer if they don't want to . Just like a setup wizard, clicking next -> next -> next should result in sensible options being used . At any stage, the completed or partially completed configuration should be able to be saved to the customer's account . Instead of giving a total of the components purchased so far, which would be expected in a shopping-cart type system, an estimated total cost of the system will be given, assuming default options are chosen for the rest of the wizard . This will help users fine tune the PC to their budget as they go . A picture of the computer will be shown as it is built, although this will be simple as it will only include external parts - the case, screen, speakers, keyboard, mouse etc . All steps of the process can be returned to at any time during the wizard, and these steps (along with the options chosen in them) are displayed at all times (unobtrusively somewhere) . A selection of pre-designed computers I offer will also be listed, and these can be customised using the same process . Once a computer is fully designed, it will move into a normal checkout process . Edit: Looking at this post made me realise that my budget is indeed a little bit impossible . . . . . That is a very complex system . I would say that there would be at least 100 hours to design that sort of thing, so @ $2-3 per hour you budget would be out by just a bit . I know of some online computer stores who contracted out that sort of job to Indian companies to build . |

You have a different page for differnet features Ram HD, etc, people click what they want and they get added together as they go through. Drawing it off the DB would be the difficult part for me. An include file like a sidebar would show each selected item and total as you go. To get a running total you just show the standard price with the actual price below it. Sure its going to take a while to make it, and 200 would merely give you a skeleton, but its certialny do-able. and probably done before |

I personally like Dells system, where it is all on one page and very simple to understand as a buyer who doesn't know much about computers. |

| 573571 | 2007-07-30 12:39:00 | Not too hard to do the nuts and bolts etc, but making it look good would need a graphic designer as well. My guess quote would be $5000 - $6000 If you are handy with excel you could make an intelligent form driven spread sheet, then convert to HTML |

I have used an indian company in the past for some programming work, but I could never get what they built to totally work, and it ended up being a complete waste of money . |
