:D

573169 2007-07-30 08:25:00 George, the Infernal Revenue Department doesn't always go by "commonsense".

They are likely to take the attitude that if you are in the business of selling computers, the amount you get from the sale of any computer is part of your taxable income. Whether you make a profit on the particular sale wouldn't make any difference.

If I sell one computer, a private transaction and not taxable. If I sell one computer every week, that's probably a business and liable to tax. If I sell a second computer one week, that would be considered part of the business.

Perhaps, but I think the worst they would do if they decided they wanted me paying tax on my private life is to tell me to.

I'm not going to be hit with a fine for paying tax on something I don't legally have to (well, if I am, I'll have something to say about it).

But I will be careful about what I say on the internet :p

Of COURSE!

573170 2007-08-01 02:01:00 George, your business is probably not a registered company, which would be a separate legal "person", with separate tax affairs. You trade in computers. Your net income from selling computers is taxable. As long as you trade as an individual, they would certainly class any sale you make of a computer as a "computer sale", and taxable.

It's a good idea to be careful what you say on the Internet. There's at least one IRD staff member a member of this forum. (Not me. ;) )

That's very surprising, I'll be sure to ask them about it some time .

I'm sure they'd throw a fit if I tried to claim the cost of buying that computer as a business expense . . . .

If I was a car dealer, and ran my car yard as a sole trader, and sold my personal car, would that be taxable income?

573172 2007-08-01 04:51:00 Quite likely. ;) The registration records of every car you handle would show that the ownership passed to you, then to a purchaser. That would apply even to one you had "bought for personal use". (Of course, every car dealer would use cars from the stock as personal transport, so every car would be exempt by your argument). You have to prove that things aren't taxable. Graham L (2)
573173 2007-08-01 05:27:00 I don't fully grasp the necessity for getting the name/number of the guys who bought your puter, but I see a possibility here .

If this was a US cash transaction, you could declare the IRS as an injured party to the transaction and let them find the guy .

THEY know how to find people . . believe me! The won't let a silly little telecom/phone company stand in their way .

Just tell YOUR IRS that there is some sort of fraud involved and they might like to collect the taxes on the transaction and that you have decided to roll over on the guy and do your civic duty .

Either that or marry a secret agent . 007 finds people all the time .

Oooh . . Oooh! . . . another idea! Just tell your local authorities that you have reasons to believe that the guy who bought your unit is a terrorist . That'll get something going fast!
