572649 2007-07-28 08:52:00 I tried talking to the banks twice (ASB and BNZ) Both times they wasted my time, and I knew more about what they could do than they did... I think I will just transfer it via sister banks. I've brought cash before, and the commission the various banks charged me before was ridiculous.
Thanks for the advice all~

572650 2007-07-28 08:59:00 Went I went overseas back in 95 I actually got Thomas Cook to set up a UK Bank account for me and got a bank cheque from my bank and gave that to Thomas Cook. Very easy. winmacguy (3367)
572651 2007-07-28 23:58:00 Since 9-11 you just cant open a Bank account easily overseas - in Australia you need 100 Points of identification - Passport 40 Drivers licence 40, Medicare Card 20 etc etc, But an overseas bank with whom you trade in NZ can open one on your behalf if you are an existing customer.
As for the UK it is now far tighter - you also need a confirmed UK address -
If you want to open an account in Australia to transfer money, you are going to have to do it through your bank in NZ (if you have one) - If you have the misfortune to be with a Bank staffed by dickheads, persevere, go up the Bank's foodchain till you find someone who can help - but it will not be a junior teller, probably from Asia.
Doing it through the banking system before you leave is best - otherwise leave the money in an NZ account until you get to Australia - open a Bank account here when you can meet the criteria (110 identification points and a proven address)and then transfer the Money - Stipulate In Aussie Dollars, or you will be hit with Bank fees at both ends.
I have already told you that you can open a Commonwealth Bank Account through ASB.

572652 2007-07-29 00:05:00 Well, guess i wont be opening an acct anytime soon then.

Since I dont have a licence, or a Medicare card whatever that is.

Obviously I dont need one, if I've never had one. Or even heard of it.

And I'm not planning on paying 80 bucks to renew my passport.

I let Thomas Cook deal with all of that, otherwise I doubt I would have been able to do it myself, although as you say with 9/11 a lot of it has probably changed.

572654 2007-07-29 04:29:00 I've transferred money the other way (Oz to NZ) many times using ozforex.com.au and can recommend them.
They charge $15.00 for the transfer and the exchange rate is always better than what the banks offer.
