| 573636 | 2007-08-05 05:09:00 | It simply isn't practical for a country like NZ to expect prices as low as in other places, where the population density is much higher. 4 million people spread over a huge land area of varying terrain isn't enough users to cover the costs involved in setting up and maintaining the equipment if prices were as low as in places such as Japan. | 573637 | 2007-08-05 11:20:00 | NewZealand has a big enough population right now. I would like the population reduced back to 2.5 million. We could do this by stopping immigration and deporting any immigrant and their families already here for any criminal offence. I arent being racist, send back Poms, yanks, (especialy yanks), europeans anyone who commits a crime. We would soon be back to a sustainable level. Its mainly the immigrants fault for most settle in Auckland South Africans & Rhodesians in North Shore, Chinese in Howick, Arabs and Indians in Mt Roskill. If they havent got the common decency to spread them selves around the country and integrate they should go back home I dont think the price of cell phone calls here is excessive taking into account the topography of the land. Those cell sites have to be pretty close together. When you fly over NZ in an aircraft with a cell phone the change of towers are fair ticking over. One way of keeping the coast down is to stop talking @#$%. Talk like a pilot requesting clearances. Keep it short and simple. Texting is a fad mainly the activity of choice of young brainless girls. tedheath |

But those cell cites were mostly put up 10 or 15 years ago and have been well paid for. Telecom and Vodaphone in NZ did not have to pay huge fees to get 3G frequencies as they did in Europe ! I read an article in the Sunday star many year sago that Vodapone basically got the investment in cellphone system back in a few years. (I wish I had kept that article.) I know for a fact that our mobile rates are one of the highest in the world and it is due to Telecom and Vodaphone being greedy. It is a major cost to consumers and business people. I accept that with our population and topography we have to expect slightly dearer prices on some items but slightly not hugely. Regards Digby |
