573129 2007-07-27 23:45:00 I would guess they will ask the coders of Ubuntu to make a special version that will run properly on their hardware.

It doesn't work like that. Linux developers are not deliberately making Linux less compatible with hardware.

Dell should, and may, ask hardware manufacturers to provide detailed specifications to Linux developers so better drivers can be produced. This applies especially to multimedia, networking, CPUs and disks.

573130 2007-07-28 07:53:00 I doubt that. Its one of the cheaper bits for me when I build one, and they'd get some bulk deal off MS.

I cant believe you pay more for many pc bits than XP. Hard disk $ 100, mbo $ 125, Case $ 100, need I say more.

But I agree Dell would get a bulk deal, they probably buy more OS's than you do.

573131 2007-07-28 08:09:00 Mikey Dell made his billions buy perfecting the art of building cheap "just in time" PCs, only problem was that the reduced profit margins caught up with Dell a while back when HP started competing for the low end PC market while making loads of dosh on printer ink. That is the reason why Dell has reverted to selling XP over Vista and pre bundling Linux.
We wish them well. :) They used to be a $70 billion PC company so they have a lot of market value to re-gain.

lol nice try winmac guy .

Sorry but I just finished working for Dell selling their machines and was there when they launched the Linux option .

They have NOT stopped selling Vista, it still outsells XP and Linux 10 to 1 at least . They offered XP as many business customers have only just moved their software from Dos based to XP .

They offered Linux as an alternative due to customer demand for something other than windows .

Please stop making facts up to suit your views .
Vista is still them Number 1 selling OS for dell and has proven to be a very stable and user friendly OS here .

573133 2007-07-28 09:39:00 I never said that they stopped selling it, I just said that they reverted back to offering/selling XP due to customer demand. I believe that they originally had a Vista only policy the moment Vista came out, but less than expected demand, a financial inquiry and a CEO re shuffle led them to re asses their priorities, a lot of which is an on going process. They also slipped from being a $70 billion company to a $50 billion which is a bit of a worry although they have moved up to around $60 billion US in value. winmacguy (3367)
573134 2007-07-28 09:47:00 I believe that Dell is also looking at transitioning from being an online only PC sales company to having PCs in themed stores that customers can look at and touch prior to buying them although as I understand it, they can't actually walk out of the store with their purchase at this stage. winmacguy (3367)

They always offered XP as an option. The press made it sound like they had to introduce it to sell some more news.

They have been running the kiosk program here in Oz and in the USA for a while now and it has proved successful which is why they are now looking at placing base models into shops. It is still only a small part of their sales.

The main reason they slipped is HP slashed and burned releasing many below spec units at cost prices to boost sales. Dell held off competing on price and stick to offering a custom build and tier 1 level components.

They are still one of the only companies to offer a 3 year next business day service warranty ONSITE.

573136 2007-07-28 11:21:00 I was aware of the Dell kiosk setup. I hear a few reports of them from time to time. I would be interested to know how Dell is going to differentiate its PCs from the likes of HP, Gateway and Acer (aside from the Dell logo)when they do the in store stuff.
I understand that HPs cost cutting cost hit Dell very hard financially.

Dell offer a build quality that leaves HP, acer and asus behind. I ahve sold all and the Dell is a way more solid machine and has a better quality and feel to it. Customers used to comment all the time at the kiosk about that.

Dell also offer the service.

3 year next business day IN YOUR HOUSE repair warranty!! That is HUGE to a lot of customers, mainly the ones Dell targets.

Like most of the clever guys they won't compete on price but on their actual point of difference. Joe Public has had enough of 'the cheapest' and many now realise you get what you pay for and if the price isn't too much more they will go for the better machine. The busiest days at the kiosk were when the local stores had a PC sale.
