A debit card, b/c its tied to your bank account, there is still a annual fee around $25 or such I think, a normal credit card is like $35 I think. But if the fees are related to bank accounts as well, then if you are wanting a freebie account with no monthly fees, each time you use the card and each time you desposit money into it there are fees, I think Westpac has it at $4 or $6 per transaction. I think, Westpac does have some freebie accounts, some are savings account online with no eftpos card but to take money out when you go in cost money but internet transfers are free, the other is with eftpos card I think electronic transactions free but if walked in and deposit money it cost you. There is a monthly fee unless you cancel your statements. If one really wanted to prevent fees, you can. Deposit money with a diff bank in that account. Then use internet bank and whip it to Westpac. Having said that unless one really wants a debit card, the normal credit card is the same price if not lower and you get the interest free period as well. That you can buy now and pay later without incurring interests. |

Can I open a Westpac debit account (without a regular job/income) and put cash in that from my internet banking account ? Regards Digby Hi I was in your situation a few weeks ago. All you have to do is open up an Elect account with Westpac (and cancel monthly statements so there is no fee) then apply for a DebitPlus card and link it to the Elect account. There is no minimum balance required and you don't needto have regular income (after all all your using is your own money). The card is only $10 per year but you don't get hotpoints like regular credit cards. So whenever you want to use your DebitPlus card, just put money into your Elect account using the internet banking account you already have (which is good because you don't get any interest from the Elect account so keep your money in your current bank account until you need to use the card, to earn interest). You can then use your DebitPlus card to fund PayPal, shop online etc.. for more information visit: http://www.debitplus.co.nz/ Hope that helps =) |

| 573046 | 2007-10-23 04:33:00 | Anyone know when other banks are going to follow (Cough ANZ Cough) They all will soon....something like 60% of the billions that went through Visa Int'l in 2006 was on debit cards. Banks can't afford to not pay attention. If they don't, then the scheme owners will "encourage" them..... |

I wondered what sort of people TV advertisements were targeted at!!! You're not serious that you'd change bank based on a few 'clever' ads (much as I enjoy the WBC cartoons - I'm with ANZ too, BTW)? |

| 573049 | 2007-10-23 05:44:00 | Lol no I wouldn't change banks because of the ads, just like you I enjoy them but I mean if I wasn't with a bank and I don't use mine all that much apart from the efpos here and there, then I'd def consider Westpac. Not to mention the fact they're the only ones with the Debit Cards atm. | --Wolf-- (128) | ||

I have a MasterCard Debit Card, from overseas. Numbers are actually "flat" on the card, so a retailer can't "imprint" the numbers and "charge" it like a credit card..... But well.... You know those parking machines, which accept credit cards? THEY accept debit cards. And what happens if your linked account to your debit card has $0??? It means that your card/account isn't deducted. BUT... The parking machines still accept it..... Hmm...... P.S: I tried it.. 2 times. ONLY |
