By the time you factor in the drive to AK airport and the 30 minute check-in deadline, plus dead time on the ground, , baggage reclaim and travel from the airport to your destination it is hardly worth the effort. Carparking or shuttle costs add to the travel cost too. I can drive from Auckland to Rotorua and back faster and cheaper than flying for the reasons mentioned above, and I can depart and return when I want to. I flew to Whakatane a few weeks back and total travelling time was four hours, waiting time was 1 hour 50 minutes at Auckland (leave early to sit at the airport rather than sit in the car in a traffic jam + delayed flight) Productive time on the job was 4 hours, then 3 hours waiting at Whakatane until the next flight back. The rest (nearly 9 hours) would have been ample for the return trip by road. I estimate that 7 hours would have been plenty. Tauranga or Rotorua typically take me 2.5 hours on a clear run without speeding. Cheers Billy 8-{) |
