572639 2007-07-25 11:23:00 Don't listen to these guys.
I went through all this last week and I'm prepared to help you out.
Here's the scheme:
Send me a PM and I'll give you my NZ bank account.
You can transfer your money into my ASB account, and I'll transfer it to my CBA account in Oz. This is a very challenging technical task involving typing numbers into forms on the ASB website and clicking the Submit button.
Then, at 3 pm on 10 Aug, I'll meet you outside the CBA at 367 Collins St in Melbourne with your money in cash.
Nothing could be easier!!
There may be a few expenses that I have to deduct and of course what you get will depend on the exchange rate, but I reckon you'll clear at least A$12K in cash.

572641 2007-07-25 11:32:00 Have a read here,
movetoaustralia.net is a useful website. I was going to suggest opening up an ANZ account in NZ and using that, but I see they cover that and more there. :)

572642 2007-07-25 12:29:00 we did a mixture of both when we moved here.

We carried $5000 each on us and transferred the rest over between ANZ accounts.

In the end we moved banks to Commonwealth anyway as they were more lenient to new arrivals for obtaining credit cards etc.

ANZ said wait 6 months commonwealth said heres your card.

Where are you headed etc??

572643 2007-07-25 21:01:00 Not sure if it still stands but check out tax refunds also. I have lived overseas a couple of times and if your out of NZ for over 15 months you can get a good percentage of your current year you leave's tax back.

It probably depends on what time of the tax year you leave NZ.

This was back in 1970's and 1980's so may no longer apply but maybe worth checking into.

Both times I moved out of NZ I opened a bank account in Aus and the UK and had my NZ bank transfer it, it was a simple process back then. Most banks in NZ are Aussie owned now so opening an Aussie account should not be a problem.

572644 2007-07-26 10:34:00 I was reading that moving to Australia thing, and it confused me a little... it says to open a bank account in Australia and transfer your money from here to there via some online exchange company called Elldridge Lynch. So I'm guess instead of transferring straight to Australia, it goes vie Elldridge Lynch for the best possible exchange rate? I'm just scared it's some kind of scam... transfer to them and never see it again...:waughh: bizzack (7739)
572645 2007-07-26 14:13:00 If cash is carried or even travellers cheques, these stupid rules and annoyances of filling out forms can be easily bypassed by splitting the cash between yourself and your partner if he or she is travelling with you at same time

I recently took similar amount in Travellers cheque, in USD.
It might pay to shop around to see if any banks can waive commission charges since they normally charge 1 % of NZ amount....in your case a possible saving of $200 in charges! I saved a substantial amount by going this route

I had a travel Serious saver account with ANZ and it allowed to buy travellers cheques with NO commission. And when i got to US i just went to a bank that does not charge for cashing travellers cheques...so i didnt pay a penny for charges

Some banks offer commission free travellers cheques if hold a certain Credit card. Just chek with your bank on waiving commission charges or worse case just open a serious travel saver account with ANZ

572646 2007-07-26 14:20:00 ASB Bank is owned by the Commonwealth Bank, BNZ is owned by the National Australia Bank.
You can open an Australian bank Account easily through one of these.
ANZ and Westpac are also Australian banks although their NZ Arms are autonomous self accounting stand alone operations., but they can arrange the same type of deal -So where is the problem?

572647 2007-07-27 02:37:00 Entering Australia with Cash is not a problem but must be declared at $10,000 or you run the risk of losing it and / or bringing attention to what agency over there. Same applies leaving NZ, not sure what the value is but could also be $10,000. We have left NZ with far more than the $750 someone mentioned earlier, $750 sounds like the duty free tax value of goods you bring in rather than taking money out.

You could leave the cash in the BNZ and once you have a Australian bank account, use you BNZ ATM card to withdraw cash in Australia. Done that using a Westpac ATM card in Australia and other countries without problems

Or arrange to open a Australian bank account via BNZ and transfer the money between banks.

Can be done, have done it myself from Westpac here to another bank / bank account but in a country with far stricter banking controls than Australia.

More than one way to skin a cat........
