573380 2007-07-28 02:45:00 Intel is planning to release a system with 16 processing cores by the end of the summer. The new platform, codenamed 'Caneland', will feature four processor sockets, each able to support the company's latest quad-core chips. The systems were first demonstrated in October last year.

I can see this being a benefit to video encoding and scientific stuff but are there any games yet that utilise 4 cores or 8 cores? I guess if there aren't that the gamer developers had better get moving.

I could happily imagine one of these being used as an epic gameserver.

573382 2007-07-28 05:07:00 A very epic games server I would imagine, or one heck of a video encoding server for a TV network winmacguy (3367)
573383 2007-07-28 06:22:00 It could be an entry level processor for games in maybe 10 years time. Our grand kids will have something a lot more powerful than this winmacguy:-) Bantu (52)
573384 2007-07-28 06:49:00 In 10 years time our computer systems should be into their 2nd or 3rd version of holographic computing or at least some real groovy version of touch screen. winmacguy (3367)
573385 2007-07-28 06:50:00 I expect something like that will be in our cell phones in about a decade or so. beeswax34 (63)
573386 2007-07-28 06:51:00 What touch screen or holographic? 8 cores in a cellphone wouldn't be very feasible. winmacguy (3367)

573388 2007-07-28 12:06:00 I won't mind having an 8-core CPU....even if it only works 1/8 of its cores all its life with me. :p qazwsxokmijn (102)
