572468 2007-07-25 06:17:00 I need to change my timing belt on the car I bought, and I'm after recommendations on a garage to take it to.

This may sound ambitious, but I want to get it done for $300 (not including the water pump, which I may or may not replace at the same time).

I have had estimates from $400 to $800 (timing belt only).

My engine is an F22B3, which has a balance shaft belt as well, bumping the price up.

Any tips on getting a good deal?

572469 2007-07-25 06:52:00 If it was a Toyota the agents are cheapish as they have so much practice doing the same models day after day. Have you asked Honda? PaulD (232)

Honda wanted $800 :D

The one and only time my parents took their Toyota to a toyota dealership for repairs (we were out of town and it started running on 3 cylinders), they charged $950 when the cambelt had slipped a notch, but they didn't change the cambelt, they just reset the timing.

It broke 2 weeks later.

572471 2007-07-25 08:42:00 I use Karori Auto Services. They have done a great job on my Corolla and WRX without charging / doing things that weren't necessary. jonboy (11457)
572472 2007-07-25 10:36:00 I did ring them this afternoon, before posting the thread. Unfortunately they were the second highest quote at around $700. george12 (7)
572473 2007-07-25 12:28:00 I take that back. I got them mixed up with someone else. They gave me the best quote yet at around $400. george12 (7)

572475 2007-07-25 22:20:00 I use Karori Auto Services . They have done a great job on my Corolla and WRX without charging / doing things that weren't necessary .

I second that . Used them for years on various vehicles and always had good work and reasonably priced .

They often collected the car from my (ex) partner so she didn't have to cart the kids around . And often drop it back afterwards .

Thought that was great service until I found out they didn't do that for other home-alone mums!

Hmmmm . . . . . . . . :annoyed:

Anyway . Remember, you get what you pay for . Cheapest is not often best .

They do that for us too . The owner said they do it for people that don't live within walking distance .

They changed the cambelt on our corolla for about $300 from memory . I will be taking the WRX when it needs it . They have quoted $800 for that .
