756812 2009-03-15 22:40:00 My computer was custom built 3 years ago and the person is now unobtainable.
Running on Wind Home Edition XP, all OK and not one problem in 3 years plus.

Going to Windows explorer etc. to system C/Windows I find that there are approx. 100 folders in Blue font before the start of usual folders in Black font.
A typical folder is labelled $NtUninstallKB885250$, $NtServicePackUninstall$.
Are these folders necessary, can they all be removed, are they using HD space.
Many thanks for replys.

756813 2009-03-15 22:45:00 Theyre the updates / hotfixes folders. For the XP updates you've installed.

You can remove them (probably be better, if you use something like ccleaner). You click on the cleaner tab / tick hotfix uninstallers option under advanced

But you wont be able to uninstall them, if you want to

You may get 26-30 mb back, which isnt that much

756814 2009-03-15 23:48:00 CCleaner says 405MB to be removed, does this sound alright. Slim (4633)
756815 2009-03-15 23:52:00 That may include temp files etc as well. If you look in the right window, it may show other folders besides the C:\windows\uninstall folders

It may also depend on what service packs were installed. With mine SP3 was slipstreamed when I installed XP. It maybe bigger, if you installed SP2, then installed SP3

756816 2009-03-15 23:58:00 There are no Temp folders, only Unistall folders.

This is about 4 years worth, could that be right.

756817 2009-03-16 00:00:00 SP2 and SP3 were both installed. Slim (4633)
756818 2009-03-16 00:05:00 Yup but ccleaner removes temp files (like sites etc you've visited), cookies, recent docs, and remains of install files, for programs you've installed as well.

Well anything thats ticked under windows/applications (under the cleaner tab)

If its ticked, ccleaner will remove whatever it uses

Thats probably about right, (If you've never used ccleaner and cleaned the files off your hdd)

756819 2009-03-16 00:39:00 The reason the files/folders are in blue is because they are compressed/encrypted.

To prevent this from happening, go to "Folder Options" , VIEW tab, and untick "Show encrypted or compressed files in colour"

Or something along those lines.

I have 49 here on XP totalling 338Mb. Just use ccleaner as Speedy said, should clear other temp files too.
