756639 2009-03-15 05:11:00 A friend purchased a laptop from his work which was formally running XP. Because the company licence has expired the XP will not allow him to use the computer so he has decided to load Linux and has asked me to download it but I'm a bit confused as to which version. Can someone please direct me to the right version. Cheers, Aporosa (5671)
756640 2009-03-15 05:14:00 What version / distribution of Linux do you want??

There's a lot of them

ie: Ubuntu, Fedora, Xbuntu, Debian, to name a few

If you ever get stuck just ask here and have a look at the documentation:

756642 2009-03-15 05:16:00 There are heaps of flavours of Linux out there some are better then others depending on a users needs.

What's the specs of the laptop.

Has he ever used Linux before? If not a great starting point is something like Ubuntu or PCLinuxOS.

756643 2009-03-15 05:59:00 He, just like me, has never used Linux before. He wants to be able to run Linux equivilent Outlook Express, Office and Firefox. I am not sure what his laptop is (specs) but understand it is 3 years old. It sounds like Ubuntu sounds like the right one.... I will check back here again before I download it. Cheers Aporosa (5671)
756644 2009-03-15 06:04:00 The linux equivalent of what you want:

OE=Thunderbird
Office=OpenOffice
Firefox=Firefox

Ubuntu will run fine on a 3 year old laptop.
