2009-03-15 04:48:00 | Hi . . I'm new in here but was told this was the best place for advice so am hoping someone can please point me in the right direction . Problem is my laptop is running extremely slowly - not sure if it is a problem with Outlook or with the actual specs / RAM . It runs at physical memory usage of 60odd% at start up . Here is what I have: Acer Aspire 5100 with pretty much std shop specs - 1GB Ram , Windows Vista, Office 07 plus some components of Office 03 . Use all the usual Office programmes + itunes, photos . Has 2 hard drives, "C" with 33 GB (currently only 6 . 72 GB free) and "D" with 32 . 7 GB (this ones has 30 . 6GB free) . Please let me know if you need more of the specs . What I have done so far is: 1 . removed as much as possible from start up leaving explorer . exe, msascui . exe, csrss . exe, ati2evxx . exe, winlogin . exe, dwm . exe and avgtray . exe (not sure what most of these do) . I usually end the dwm . exe process manually with no apparent ill effects . 2 . installed and run spybot search & destroy - this found (and fixed) 2 trojans and 4 pups (not sure what they are) 3 . installed and run AVG antivirus . Haven't looked at the results of this yet . 4 . moved all of my files (eg . spreadsheets, access databases, itunes library, photos) from the C drive to D . My C drive is still almost full . 5 . tried (and failed) to scan the Outlook PST file (this was per advice found on majorgeeks . com) - this failed and then recommended I do a scan disk and try the scan PST again . The scan disk appeared to work but I still can't get the scan pst function to work . So . . . . the problems are: 1 . Outlook keeps freezing and generally behaving badly . I am running Outlook 03 . 2 . I can't upload photos from my memory stick to the D drive (this in itself could be a problem with the memory stick I guess) . 3 . No matter what I do, physical memory seems to be running very high . 4 . IE runs slowly at random times but not sure if this is a broadband or laptop issue . 5 . There seems to be a lot on my C drive but I am at a loss as to what could actually be removed . I am thinking I should be upgrading my RAM and / or upgrading Outlook to 07 or another email programme altogether . I am ready to bin the entire thing as it is just so frustrating . This has been happening on an off for a few months and came right for a while when I removed a lot of the start up things . It has been almost unusable for the last week . Please help!! Thanks in advance, Paula

2009-03-15 04:53:00 | Welcome to the forum ! Post a hijackthis log, its in the link below Run it, click on scan the system and save a log. Copy and paste the log here Not too sure if csrss.exe (somehow, I dont think it should be) running in startup See if you can get some more space back with ccleaner (www.ccleaner.com) Install it, (untick yahoo toolbar, you dont need it), run it close browsers / go to the cleaner tab, click on run cleaner

2009-03-15 05:10:00 | Vista uses a lot of space for System Restore points. Clean them up, and you should gain many GBs of space. :) www.mydigitallife.info Also, IE runs slow by design. Get Firefox. :p Does the memory stick work fine on other PCs? If you only use Outlook for email, ditch it for Thunderbird. If you do use the calendaring features etc., you'll have to either upgrade to Outlook 2007 and see if it fixes it, or live with it. I recommended at least 2GB of RAM for Vista, even Home Basic.

2009-03-15 05:32:00 | Firstly, moving everything from D to C is bad, and will slow Vista down even further! So move it all back, and make sure C drive has at least 5-10gb of free space. Try running office diagnostics and see if it solves anything, instructions and screenshots can be found here: www.online-tech-tips.com Download Firefox as mentioned, and see if the slowness persists. If it does, are you using wireless? If you are, check the strength of the connection in Network and Sharing Center If it is low you will either need to move closer to the router and/or make sure their are no other devices such as phones etc interfering with the signal. Go to add/or remove, then uninstall unneeded programs. Also perform a defrag with Auslogics Disk Defrag: www.auslogics.com Run ccleaner first. Also, the reason vista is using so much memory is because it has a feature called superfetch, which tries to "optimize" free memory, in simple terms. I recommend you also get another 1gb of RAM, for only abour 25-35 bucks off trademe or any PC shop, as vista is quite a resource hog that requires LOTs of memory to run. Blam

2009-03-15 05:52:00 | Also-regarding Outlook freezing. Try compacting the ps file and see if it helps FILE>DATA FILE MANAGEMENT>PERSONAL FOLDERS>SETTINGS>COMPACT If that doesn't work, go run>outlook /safe and see if it freezes. Blam

2009-03-15 06:02:00 | Thanks Blam . I've done the compact thing for Outlook and so far so good . Have also downloaded Firefox and that also appears faster . Did a defrag earlier in the week so that should be ok . I've also carried out the system restore clean up recommended by pcuser and that has give my c drive a couple more gb back . Will get on to the rest of speedy gonzales recommendations later on tonight . Thanks everyone for all of your help - it all seems to have made a difference for now and I'll get on to the extra RAM this week . cheers
