ibid: "..........This Tour turned into a circus after it emerged that Rasmussen was competing despite missing doping controls in May and June, and after Kazakh star Alexandre Vinokourov — a pre-race favorite — and Cristian Moreni of Italy failed doping tests. They and their teams left the race, and police raided their hotels, searching for doping products."

574054 2007-07-29 23:16:00 Its really sad .

Those guys get my total admiration, its the hardest sport in the world to do . To race over 100kms nearly every day for 21 days .

Its a pity that the drug issue takes the the gloss off the best cyclists on the planet .

I read a book which talked about how the riders run a fine line between malnutrition and sickness and the ability to ride . The need absolutly minimum weight yet maximum strength and endurance . .

Their bodies are so depleted that they are paranoid of catching an illness . One wife said she knew her husband (Tyler Hamilton?) was ready for the Tdf when she could see his kidney's under his skin .

So as athletes they make incredable sacrifices for their sport, its a pity the drugs are an issue .

574055 2007-07-30 03:18:00 I agree . . . . but I place the blame on sponsorships and CEOs of bicycle, foods, beer, shoe and sportswear companies .

Money demands higher and higher performances and the athletes pay with ruined bodies and reputations .

But . . to digress a little . . . if the athletes didn't use the enhancers, they'd be more like athletes and not zombies . They still have to take responsibility for their own actions and desires to artificially excel .

It's just not right that an athlete demands and gets salaries higher than teachers and civil authorities . What does an athlete do for your water supply, highway repairs, food cleanliness and social infrastructure? Nothing!

574056 2007-07-30 04:54:00 What do you mean, Joe: "failed doping tests"? They obviously passed the drug tests. ;) Graham L (2)

Oooops . . . but it was a c/p that I made . . . not my own words there . . . . .

I wouldda said:

"The doped-up bikers were in full tilt as they couldn't focus on the road ahead let alone the pedals on their bicycles . Swerving into the crowd had one official who was employed by a major athletic shoe manufacturer in the off season asking if dope-tests were really necessary this year or not . The answer was a resounding "NO!" and the races went on . "
