573749 2007-07-29 02:58:00 A whole 25 threads active in the PressF1 forum yesterday. That's information overload? From the perspective of dividing the forum, yes. At the current post rate, a knotty problem can be bumped off the front page by tomorrow, which isn't exactly ideal. Splitting means that no-reply threads will hang around in a prominent position for a couple of days longer, thus giving people who don't look past the first page a chance to reply. I know I rarely if ever look past page 1 unless it's to find a particular thread I am already following - and I suspect many others are the same. Erayd (23)
573750 2007-07-29 03:10:00 It isn't a problem, Bletch. It's up to you whether you go past the first page. There are many people who do. I have my options set for 80 threads/page. Make your pages longer if you worry about it.

How would splitting the help forum into PC, Mac, Linux, and "Other" (there are other OSs ... ;) ) help?

The PC forum would have one or two fewer active threads each day, and the others would never be visited by those who don't look past the first page of the single forum (because they would seldom have a new thread).

I'd much sooner click once to see the next page than twice to get to another forum.

573751 2007-07-29 03:19:00 Heh, the ironic thing is that shouldn't this thread be in the Chat forum?

As others say: not enough posts per day and people can't even handle the choice of two forums.

573752 2007-07-29 03:23:00 Why it won't be happening: Takes too much to set up run. If the PCWorld IT people can't even set up the time correctly, splitting the forum ain't going to happen. And it doesn't earn PCWorld a dime. vinref (6194)

Maybe that could be something for Jan to look into *waves at Jan*

573754 2007-07-29 04:43:00 I think the forum should stay the way it is. If you're too lazy to search the forum for a particualr topic or cannot post appropriately describing your problem then maybe you shouldn't be participating in the forum until you are able to do these things.

Cheers

My main point is to sort the PressF1 forum into various issues possibly. Not planning on changing ChatF1 as that is off topic or non computer help related.

This is the reason I posted on purpose in the PressF1 section for those that need or want to know.

I do not think I am lazy but sometimes I get a little tired of threads that start "need help" and I have no idea what the person wants HELP with. So then I have to go back though previous threads or posts to figure out what may be going on.

Then we have all the people who try to give help and do not read or comprehend the question before making the reply.

I TRY to explain a problem, if I have one, in a manner that explains the problem and anything I have tried to do to fix the problem.

Problems can be related or not as the case may be.

If you have a post which has a TITLE "My computer won't boot." Followed by text saying, " I turned it on but it does not go." What questions would you have to ask in order to accurately diagnose the problem?

If you were looking at a post like that would you go to the trouble of searching/reading other posts by the same person if any? What would you do if the above comes as the first post by a new user for example?

PressF1 is a computer HELP forum and there are those here whom can and do HELP. For that I thank them.

My reason for starting this thread was mostly as I see PressF1 members talking among themselves and not getting to the issue.

If IE7 was broken then let us fix the application.
Offering an alternative is not the correct answer in my opinion.

If we all change to Firefox as a browser and we change all software etc including all operating systems etc. And everyone HAS to own a Mac. And we all use open source software. Also we ALL have a Ford/Holden AMD/Intel as we have to. Insert your brand wherever.

Fortunately I built my computer and use what I want in the way of the operating system and applications. This way I can be reasonably productive.

I do realise that some people may use a Win PC at home and have to use a Mac at work for example.

573755 2007-07-29 04:56:00 This has been "discussed"several times .

The site isn't busy enough to justify the problems splitting into categories would cause .

Many people with computer problems don't know what OS they are using . ;)

I can see a justification for generating a few persistent threads with names like "Irrelevant, but I hate <name of computer manufacturer>" . The moderators could move responses which don't offer help for the questioners problem, but just inform us that the writer hates the particular brand . One recent question received 42 responses . 7 referred to the problem . The rest were reactions to the manufacturer's name . I'm sure the questioner was delighted to be told that their new purchase was rubbish by arrogant people who had no help to offer about the problem . I doubt if the questioner will come back .

Very close to my point . Thanks .

It is not a matter of brand for me . It is more like trying to help . If I started saying I have a DELLxxx or IMBxxx or HPxxx the usual answer is do not have one of these . If you do then turn into a Linux box and etc .

I would like to address the actual problem if I could .

573756 2007-07-29 04:59:00 That’s one of the things I like about this board, 2 forums just nice. ;)

I think too many other forum sites get too carried away with all their categories.

In the case of IE7 and the amount of people who have had problems with it (including my parents) I think the best thing would be to dump it and use FF rather than to wait for MS to sort out the problem since computing is supposed to be easy not a pain in the a**.

I don't believe that everyone has to change platforms as moving to Mac wouldn't suit a lot of gamers and people who like to build their own custom machines but it would suit a lot of multimedia and general home users as well as people who seem to get repeatedly struck down by assorted forms of malware for various reasons (where common sense or lack of web sense might be a factor).

In many situations one of the many Linux distros might be more suited to solving the problem than staying on Windows.

Most people who use Macs at work (apart from some IT types) use them because they want to where as it is very unusual for someone to have to use a Mac at work unless they are an afore mentioned IT type.

the real problem is the human element . sorry to say but i don't see changing the layout will achieve anything . you will simply get the general section filled with all the "need help" questions .

if this forum had the hundreds of threads a day like other forums then yes it would be worth reorganising things .

its difficuilt to deal with the human element at times, you just have to take it with a grain of salt ;)
