575124 2007-08-02 01:08:00 So I have a 1996 Subaru WRX. It is a 2L Turbo and runs best on 96. Will this ethanol blend fuel be any good for my car? jonboy (11457)
575125 2007-08-02 01:44:00 Another good reason not to buy a Jap Import. And to buy Honda!! johcar (6283)
575126 2007-08-02 01:44:00 No bloody way is this stuff every going into my Trueno! even if it is "compatible" it runs perfectly fine on 95 octane fuel anyway :p MAC_H8ER (5897)
575127 2007-08-02 02:37:00 When I raced a combo gas/alcohol dragster many years ago, we usually ran somewhat larger than stock jets in the carb for the Street/Gas class .

When we switched to alky in the same car, same engine, now in D- or E-Fuel class, we just basically took the jets out of the carb and just let the alcohol run without any jets at all . We went faster, but we used a LOT more fuel .

We needed that extra flow and size to accommodate the requirements to get a good air:fuel ratio, especially at near to sea-level at Long Beach Lion's Drag Strip .

Gasoline runs pretty good at 16:1 or on the lean side at 17 . 5:1 .

Alcohol on the other hand like to run around 5:1 or 6:1 .

exactly . when i was into race cars the ones that ran methanol run 3x the about of fuel . you could/can get kits for popular carbs like hollys, otherwise they run special alcohol only carbs . main difference is they are geared for big fuel flow . don't forget the fuel pumps and lines had to be sized for it as well .
however the alochol powered motors ran cooler which is important for racing on dirt where the raditors often blocked up with clay .

the other problem is ethanol sucks up water like crazy and its very hard to get the water out of it .

if i remember rightly fuel stations use to pour methanol into the petrol tanks to soak up the water due to water leaking into the tanks ;)

btw an old trick for high perfonace street vechiles, run a extra injector to add more fuel to stop it going lean but use a 2nd tank and use methanol or 100 octane race fuel ;)

575128 2007-08-02 09:17:00 i saw the bit on the news.

kinda funny how the car yards said ok for NZ new but not for jap imports! common people, they are the same vechile off the same assembly line! the only difference mayby is the tuning for different grade gas.

ethanol is a strong solvent, and will dissolve/degrade many plastics and most rubbers. it also has been found to dissolve deposits in fuel lines/tanks, breaking off bigger bits that then block injectors/jets further down the track.
as such it isn't recommended for older cars that weren't built to run ethanol and may have sensitive rubbers/plastics/deposits in them

even my '98 and my friend's '03 high-performance dirtbike's manuals both say not to run any mix of ethanol as is will damage the fuel lines and carburetor components.

you are right though, it does pay to tune your car for the gas you run.

oh and surfer, doesn't pure ethanol have an octane rating of 130 or something ridiculous like that that allows for much higher compression, giving better efficiency and more power - albeit at the cost of very high fuel consumption

oh, and if the govt. was really serious about CO2 emmissions why not build nuclear plants and encourage electric vehicles with incentives.

hell, in auckland they don't even have electric rail. nothing like seeing black fumes pouring out of a passenger train - and the same for buses:yuck:

575130 2007-08-02 14:04:00 Surfer Joe, always thought alcohol motors,(Jap speedway)ran on 15.1 + and super benzene was 8 or 9.1 roughly. These were the air cooled motor cycle motors.? BobM (1138)
