574226 2007-07-30 09:40:00 The anti smacking law was never going to prevent child abuse as seen on our TVs at the moment.

Exactly. Just as it is illegal to commit murder, that doesn't mean it doesn't happen. So should we just remove the charge of murder from the Crimes Act??

Honestly guys, the smacking argument was an anti-child abuse position. I'd have thought 99% of Kiwis would be glad to know hitting kids was unlawful.

574227 2007-07-30 09:50:00 I rather doubt 99% of kiwis would agree smacking children was a bad thing. Cicero (40)
574228 2007-07-30 10:01:00 I just find it ironic how that guy from the Maori party blames uninvolved parties of all this child abuse.

Family A abuses its child. Families B, C, D and E gets the blame too. What the hell?Possibly because family B could have been the neighbours who watched this kid getting abused and did nothing? Ya think?

This kid was abused for 3 days, such as being swung around on the clothesline until gravity kicked in and she fell off. And the neighbours saw it happen... and did nothing.

What kind of pathetic (and apathetic) society do we live in?

Incidentally, I watched Pita Sharples tonight on TV (Campbell Live). At first I thought he was garnering votes, but upon thinking about what he was saying, he is dead correct. (About now one of you reading this is going to be saying ****ing maoris all talk no action, they all do this, its their problem, etc etc .... ). We as a society need to take ownership of this problem. There are community groups etc out there all dotted around our society, ready to help, but in need of government money.
In the meantime, a government funded moneypit (aka CYFS) is sitting on its hands doing what? What do they actually do? They are a huge organisation, and they do what exactly? Look after the affairs of kids??? They're doing a piss poor job of it. Helping the commmunity? LOL. When did you ever see CYFS having a bar-b-q all in the name of the community? What do they do??? And for those people who were slagging off the maoris before, consider this.... CYFS is an organisation based on the european way of thinking, the institution way; NOT the whanau (family) orientated way like the small organisations that are out there (like Mahia Mai for instance) who are fighting for funds to survive

574229 2007-07-30 10:55:00 It always amazes me how everyone has an opinion on this particular event, and others like it, when all any of us know about it is what the media have reported. The media does not report the facts, or the truth. The media reports stories that generate ratings. Inconvenient facts and the truth often work against ratings.

It's a very dangerous thing to form opinions and ascribe blame when you don't really know what actually happened.

And what were they saying in the paper yesterday? Bring back corporal punishment in schools, because of the increase in assaults on teachers from these little s***s.

There already were laws about serious abuse of kids, smacking is a completely different thing.

And?

It's turned into OUR problem, but it isn't OUR doing.

Think you'll find it's more than "one" saying that.

The reality is that CYFS are underfunded, under-resourced, and understaffed . New social workers are being brought in from England because there aren't enough in New Zealand .

Really the answer isn't money - it is kindness and help, intervention by family and friends in families who cannot cope . We have to get over the "It's none of my business" thinking .

574235 2007-07-30 22:34:00 I am now 41 yrs old, when I was 17-20, there was a lot of teenage pregnancies. My mates and I would laugh at the ideals of these people who would dis-regard advice from there parents etc, go get pregnant and live off the social.
These people were so young, and had very little parenting skills if any. Now, its their childrens children and still there is no parenting skills, is it any wonder that this sort of thing is happening.

No local parenti at schools, no respect of adults and no parenting skills.......here comes ANARCHY!!
