574163 2007-07-30 09:01:00 That depends on how you define "serious competitor"
If your talking by market share then it will possibly happen in the next 5-10 years with Apple getting up to around 15% of the market and Linux maybe 5%+
If you mean as a suitable alternative OS, Apple has been a more than suitable alternative for about the last 5 years and Linux continues to be developed.

Sun Microsystems were doing the carousel + dock (minus the touch screen) back in the late 80's and NeXT OS had the concept before Sun. Apple has the touch and squeeze UI with the iPhone.

depends on what you want to do with it

that said, microsoft IS going broke, or rather they aren't making any money....
one day they'll learn that they are wasting their advantage they have over linux and apple and maybe stop screwing the consumer over...

then again, maybe not

574168 2007-07-30 13:22:00 Um. MS's profit was even larger than last years. How exactly is it going broke??? Sure the share price has been largely stable and stagnant but the company is still hugely profitable and is likely to be so for a while to come. beeswax34 (63)
574169 2007-07-30 13:30:00 i beleive i said that there weren't making money;

apparently sometime recently they have started to lose their momentum and are becoming less profitable. with billions in the bank this won't be a problem for a while yet, but if MS carries on as it is apple and linux will get too strong to kill back off. EDIT: now i think about it that came from an Inquirerer article, which while well written may not be entirely accurate EDIT AGAIN: well i checked the date on said article, so i'll just refrain to pointing out the recent failures that vista and IE7 are

seriously, if their OS is going to increase the cost of a new computer by 50-100% why not go mac or linux? once programmers start making the shift apple will get a huge boost. hopefully they'll open up their hardware at some point too but that of course would hurt their profits because jobbs seems too shortsighted to realise that's all thats holding apple away from gamers and many specialist applications. hell if they made the damn things cheaper it would open them up to everyone else too

574170 2007-07-30 13:43:00 I have faith, Faith the the great unwashed masses will click onto the fact that Windows releases have peaked (XPSP2) and are now in steep decline.

Hopefully MS will collapse. God I hope it does.

No one said Microsoft was going broke, but your right, their share price has been stagnant for about the last 6 years and their annual profit is gradually reducing mainly because despite spending untold billions on research they don't actually have a whole lot to show for it. Their main large source of revenue is and has been their Office products - as is explained in the article.

For Microsoft to really grow their quarterly profit would have to increase YOY. As is stated in the article Microsoft is attempting to fire in all directions because in they don't know which specific area/s will bring the "killer" app rather than having a couple of clearly defined areas to develop a great product and be the first to market with it.

Programmers are actually making a gradual shift to Apple which was recently noted in MacWorld UK (about a 5% increase). Don't expect Apple to "open" the OS anytime soon but do expect them to continue to make APIs available to developers. I doubt that they will ever open the hardware.

Apparently the iPhone has been hacked to the benefit of developers which could become quite significant in the long run.

Apple is also offering iPhone based web developer classes.
