574022 2007-07-29 22:00:00 Hi

My car must have seen time by the sea as the underbody has quite a bit of surface rust on it and the mechanic that did my last WOF reckoned it needed attention to get another one.
Can anyone recommend a DIY rust removal/treatment product from maybe Repco or Supercheap?
I've found these two via google but don't know how good they are.

574023 2007-07-29 22:26:00 Jeez I wish I new the name/brand of the stuff I have. Maybe pop into your local Repco or whatever. The stuff I use is very penetrative, and turns the runs into a black metal - super hard. I got it from a auto supplier who've since closed down in the area.

But yeah, suggest you go browse the shelves.

574024 2007-07-29 22:33:00 Have you seen it? Our car also has "surface rust" but that's never been mentioned. One thing they are fussy about is rust on any brake lines and I wouldn't try covering them in any "goo" that would hide their condition. PaulD (232)

Those products help stop rust, it doesn't remove it. If there are holes you'll need a welder.

The best treatment is preventive; the manufacturers try with antirust treatments before painting. Hot dip galvanising is about the best for steel, but car makers don't do that, for some reason. ;)

Some "rustkiller" products contain phosphoric acid to convert the oxide to phosphate. This works well if the rust is an even thin film. They don't work through paint. :( When the rust is thick and has formed holes it's a bit late. Nothing is going to convert the rust back into metal.

574027 2007-07-30 05:42:00 One that comes to mind is "Naval Jelly ( . amazon . com/Permatex-81756-Naval-Dissolver-Bottle/dp/B0007TQW5G" target="_blank">www . amazon . com)" . . not for the human navel, but for metallic structures (except for aluminum), that has a rust coat .

After washing it off, apply a good RustOleum (http://www . rustoleum . com/) type brush or spray paint in the color of your choice .

We don't get rust from salt here in SoCal, but we see a lot of cars from back East that are just basically skeletons of their former self .
