Some of you may know that I recently posted a post (www.pressf1.co.nz)in Pressf1 regarding to this AsusF5R laptop's fan coming on and off. Well after a day or two of more testing my friend had decided to get/try a refund on the laptop.

Story is: Brought a laptop from PBTech less than 5 days ago, main reason of buying was b/c the sales person said it was a quiet laptop (also hearing it at the store was also quiet, yet there was surrounding noises). However after using it and testing it, we found that fan turns on and off very often, literally with seconds in between not minutes (this is under XP). Under Vista the fan turns off and on with longer periods in between, however after a while (say an hr) the fan will just stay on for good. After some testing I came to the conclusion that the laptop's normal operating temp is around 45C, however the laptop fan turns on at 40C, that resulting the fan to be constantly spinning. And as you know, a laptop with constant spinning fan is not quiet!

So I was wondering does my friend have a feasible reason for wanting a refund on the laptop?

Inputs/suggestions, all welcome!

576682 2007-08-05 08:07:00 The fan on my laptop runs pretty much all the time when the CPU is running at full speed (2GHz)
If I have it on battery the CPU runs at a slower speed so the fan doesn't have to be on all the time.
I would say this is normal, with the speed that laptop CPUs run at these days.

576683 2007-08-05 09:53:00 If your friend specifically specified that he was looking for a quiet laptop, and this laptop was susgested by the sales-rep, then i would think your friend has at-least one leg to stand on.

As you bought it for that reason, and after it was suggested by a sales-rep then its the sales-reps responsability to provide a product that fits your needs. And by the sounds of it, it isn't.

Whoa, it's like reading a Dr. Suess book.

"Quietness" is a subjective concept. All laptops will have fans which will spin at some point. Quite often in shops there's a lot of white-noise present (i.e. other ambient sounds caused by other machines/people), which makes things sound quieter than they are.

576686 2007-08-07 04:03:00 Yeah that what I've found, a lot of laptops sound very quiet in shops due to the background noises however its a whole different story once you get it back home and tried using it at 12am in morning .

And yeah, I would of thought that the sale rep have at least some responsibility due to he recommended the laptop and we brought it for the reason he gave . . . . But then 'somebody' did brought up a good point, quietness is is a subjective concept . . . .

So . . . :(

576687 2007-08-07 04:48:00 And it was bought after hearing it running. Of course, that was in the shop, but there are many houses with higher ambient sound levels than many shops.

Give it a couple of weeks, and you won't notice it.
