We have been probably doing this for over 15 years now and is a great way to stay in touch with far away family. Anyways, the CD's are made up from songs that we have purchased and we are the only 2 sending each other these compilations. No cash or anything like that involved. So is this illegal? |

| 576248 | 2007-08-03 20:29:00 | AFAIK Yes and any proposed law change so far won't make it legal. The practical thing to do will be kept it quiet, non commercial and off the internet. | PaulD (232) | ||

| 576250 | 2007-08-04 08:51:00 | It is against the law to reproduce copyrighted works without the owner's permission - it doesn't matter whether it's non-profit, personal, or whatever. There are some exceptions for organisations such as schools and tertiary institutes to make partial copies of books etc., however they must pay $x into a pool which is distributed to copyright owners. |

One concept exists in a moral sphere - the other exists in a world in which anything is ok unless there is a specific law against it. Anyway, what you've done is certainly against the law, but it's doubtful whether the holder of the entitlements conferred by the copyright will be getting their people to talk to your people... Unless you got online and posted about it on an internet forum, that is... |
