576635 2007-08-08 06:37:00 Try grid computing. That's distributed parallel computing; an extreme variant of multiprocessing not multitasking. I doubt if anyone would even dream of trying that using any incarnation of Windows. Graham L (2)
576636 2007-08-08 06:40:00 Indeed we were, I was responding to kenj's comment. As far as I know this forum is still talking about the Vista appreciation society. ;)

If you could read and comprehend the posts in this thresd then you would note that most do not appreciate Vista. I am staying with XP for my own reasons.

Running WinXP as I do, I can donate my unused CPU cycles to things like SETI, Medical research etc. This seems like a good thing to do for me.

Grid computing is a phrase in distributed computing which can have several meanings:

Note the word several. Several to me means more than one or two.

Now the computer is on 24/7 most times. During that 24 hours I can sleep between six to nine hours. I work six days per week at the moment. I may only work five hours in a day or I may work between 12-14 hours.

In the meantime, other people could use my box to do there own thing.

I believe that the setups I mentioned actually run on the first of the G5 Xserves that have dual processors so multi processing/multi tasking.

576640 2007-08-08 19:47:00 I can't see a single shred of relevancy in your links, perhaps you can explain?

Cue-Uninformed irrelevant babble.

If its just to showcase that some Mac application can work with HD video then you need to re-read my comment, Its not 1938, Plenty of video editing suites work with high-definition video, Thats not the issue. Apple isn't special, Though I dear say many of its users would have been labeled with the tag.
That dear Met is his wont,it will never be otherwise.

576641 2007-08-08 19:53:00 Lots of you guys may like Vista, but you have to think. Is it really worth it?

Sure, if you are gamer, it is. Period. There's no debating that. Windows is the gaming OS.

But if you are businessmen, or never play games, isn't it just cheaper and more economical to use a Linux or Mac computer, and not spend all this money on a new Vista operating system, high-quality video cards, expensive CPUs and components, and so on? Just buy a new Ubuntu laptop from Dell! It's cheaper, and provides less crashes than Windows. A true businessman should not care what his operating system looks like. He should not need aero-glass backgrounds. He should want a fast computer that gets its job done, and nothing else.

Actually there is a gaming debate. There is not a single true DirectX 10 built from the ground up game released yet.

Even games like Crysis were 90%+ built on DX9 technology and have a few extra DX10 enhancements, which are nice but not mind blowing over DX9 (I appreciate that is subjective).

Most current high end games run slightly worse on Vista currently, not subjective.

Lastly many people buying mid to low end DX10 GPU's like the 8600GTS are going to be hugely disappointed when they have to turn off most if not all DX10 eye candy anyway, as there cards won't have the grunt to run it. Those that have 8800GTS+ will have some benefit from Vista but nothing like the DX9 over DX8 transition. A year or two from now sure it will be a different story sure.

With Mac OS 10.3 if my memory serves me correctly although they were using Fortran and COBOL since they were effectively running on Unix. From the pics I saw, some of the techs were definitely using PC lap tops to check stuff.
