576731 2007-08-05 23:02:00 I was quite happy about the repeal of s57 of The Crimes Act, actually. I didn't see why children couldn't have the same recourse to the law as did an adult for common assault.

"Flip flop flip flop" - so, a Fox News fan there, JackStraw? (Or was it just a wee troll - go on, be honest...?)

576732 2007-08-05 23:35:00 So have the miscreants in Rotorua been charged under Bradford's bill??? Or is it just a plain murder (unlawful killing?) charge now....? johcar (6283)

Your question is nonsensical. "Bradford's Bill" repealed a defence to a charge - it did not introduce a new offence.

I think you misunderstood my post. No I'm not a Fox fanboy and it was not a troll. I was referring to the likes of Johncar and his ilk having been "appalled"
by what he refered to as the "Bradford Bill" and now wants the full force of the law to be used against these murderers. Hence the flip flop comment. Well now section 57 has been repealed they have even less of a defence and the full force of the law can put them away for life, hopefully.

what rubbish, Section 57 was never a defense for abuse or murder...even if some desperate fools tried their luck with it. Should we remove the argument of self-defense because in the past people have tried to use it as a reason for murder?

Removing it has made no children safer while it does manage to put severe restrictions on parents disciplining their children, and lack of discipline is one of the reasons crap is now so far out of control.

Some people, kids included need a kick up the backside to be shown the error of their ways.

But...this has been done to death already, If my son gets a pat on the backside (which most probably wouldn't faze him for a second) then I'm a criminal....and abusers are still abusing their children.

No good has been served to the community.

576736 2007-08-06 06:31:00 "Bradford's Bill" certainly brought the insidious violence within christianity out into the open - and Simon Barnett helped a lot with that. Deane F (8204)
576737 2007-08-06 07:55:00 Agreed and I believe in this particular case that public shaming, humiliation and stoning should be bought back in as a form of punishment as I don't believe that the accused should be allowed to hide from public view with what they did to a poor little 3 year old member of their family. Anyone who thinks my suggestion is too un PC and too brutal should put themselves in her little shoes and ask what she did to deserve to be treated like that.

Yes I think your suggestion is too PC. The people that did it - all of them should be shown on TV then taken to a hospital (or vets) and castrated (physically or chemically - their choice, the girls should be sterilized.

Then

1 They won't do it again
2 We wont have to pay to keep them in jail
3 They probably won't do any other violent acts for the rest of their miserable lives.
3 Other people will really think twice and thrice about doing similar deeds.

Turn them loose.

576739 2007-08-06 08:11:00 Incidentally, rather than listen to all the TV hype, does anyone have any cold hard facts as to the numbers of abused kids there really are? European, Asian, as well as Maori

We never hear of any other ethnicity other than Maori, is that because there are none, or is that what the TV would have us believe?

Don't know. But I know that the media wouldn't want to risk being accused of racism. So it may well be cold hard fact.
