576056 2007-08-04 06:03:00 Maybe 1963 was a bit too early for the plague of Chinese fake bolts to have got into the US.

We had an air traffic control radar tower collapse in Wellington some years ago because fake class 8 Chinese bolts had been used. Tests showed they were just crummy mild steel.

By that time our local bolt manufacturer, Ajax, which used to be part of the UK GKN group had closed due to New Right policies. Of course a reputable manufacturer could not compete against mild steel fake bolts made by coolie labour.

By that time also, the more or less free QA that had been provided by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research had long gone, so importers could and still do import all sorts of crap with no QA oversight.

Can any one here apart from our pink friends, believe they would blame a government for the types of bolts that go into a structure.

576057 2007-08-04 06:15:00 That's just rotten to say about ANYBODY dying..even from you.

Have you no scruples or shame?

i just don't see how it can be justified that outside the states we hear more about 4 missing american soldiers than the hundred or so innocent bystanders that have been killed by those soldiers in their time there, or in this case 100 people are killed in a train wreck yet we only hear about the 4 confirmed deaths in an american bridge collapse (in one of the richest countries in the world no less)

i bet was there an american on said train we'd atleast have heard something

Sorry if the FACTS rest uncomfortably with you Cic. :)

576060 2007-08-04 07:00:00 Oh no! Not the Denis Dutton article again.
Seems like someone has the hots for him.
Anyone notice the strange story about the hypocrite in the Koru lounge. Since nothing libellous was being said why not name him?
Or maybe the story is a lie....those right wing philosophers are shameless.

NZ can do do that with car crashes over the weekend and it dosent make the lead news here.
When I think about how many innocent people the Yanks have killed in the middle east it makes my blood boil.
I have a theory, these disasters in Usa like Bridge collapse, 911, New Orleans
flooding etc are karma paybacks. For supporting the juden in their occupation of West Bank and Gaza and US occupation of Iraq and Afiganistan.

576062 2007-08-04 11:47:00 That possibly says as much about our media, as anything .

Either, our investigative journalists are stifled, or are practically non-existent .

I do not think it is fair to judge an innocent person because of their country's politicians or policies . I doubt very much that most of those sent to another country, to fight a politician's war, actually enjoy being there .

Now . . now . . . the "journalists" are just drive-by bullies who have gotten completely out of control .

Seeking to embroil the mental midgets who can at least turn on their televisions, they present a virtuous-appearing bellweather to the ills and contrived nastiness of the power-hungry zealots in the opposing camps . The truth is much further from the news as a whore squirming in church .

Given the opportunity of the liberal party getting the upper hand in political seats and posts, the Zionism and self-aggrandizements will be the same, although painted with a different colored brush on the other side of the tabloid canvas .

The quasi-fair journalists will then rally against the authority-la-mode and that's all for the benefit of selling column inches .

I particularly liked this:

" . . . . . Last year, I found myself in the Koru Club at Wellington Airport, amid all the busy people chatting, reviewing their papers and savouring food and wine between important Government meetings . There among parliamentarians and corporate pinstripes I spied one of our leaders of the anti-globalisation movement chatting enthusiastically on the phone, doubtless en route to deliver another anti-capitalist keynote address or watch a McDonald’s trashing .

It was a delicious image, and in a way reassuring for anyone who really loves the idea of a free society . Communism needed to shoot anti-communists . Capitalism, by contrast, can afford to indulge anti-capitalists, as long as they pay their Koru Club dues .

Immanuel Kant once remarked that “from the crooked timber of humanity no truly straight thing can be made . ” Capitalism does not try to straighten the warped wood that we are but adjusts itself to us .

For people in search of a perfect world, that will always seem an unsatisfactory solution . For those who love freedom, it’s not a bad thing at all . "

I . . of course . . . am non-political (yes, it's true!), but I am a keen observer of the human condition, as it is .

Translation for texters: "It's about the money" . Sorry I cannot dumb it down any better than that .

John Lennon would love you..but what you said means that you give at least a semblance to the thought that there might be a giant, cosmic thumb over your head too.

You are really beating my drum here . . thanks .

In the grander scheme of things, what you say is true . . . but the coldness of reality is that if someone is in a military pact or junta or civil uprising or occupation of another country, then where do you draw the line between "innocent" and "politically aligned"?

It's all an assignation . Check that out in your Funk & Wagnalls . Assignations happen when one gives power to another under the guise of "doing the right thing" for them . Joining a military force is of and by itself an act of usurpation of SOMEONE ELSE'S rights somewhere .

The guy with the biggest stick makes the rules . . . as sad as that may be . If you're there, then you are just as guilty as the power that sent you there .

Seems to me, to quote from another John Lennon-ism, "Imagine" . . etc . (C'mon, you know the lyrics):

Imagine there's no Heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today

Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace

You may say that I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one

Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world

You may say that I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will live as one

Now . . I admit to this rather Utopian thought: If one can "Imagine" these things, then there'd be no problems . . . but I proffer to say that the HUMAN way is subversive and substantiative of it's own designs if it can get away with them, that is .

Unfortunately, imagining Utopia does not suffice for or allow one to actually live there . There is an exception, but it requires electricity and some electrodes .

One can dream (ibid) but one cannot live in a dream unless induced by self-druggery either in recreational pharmaceuticals' mental denial or ivory tower-ism as you have purported .

My input in my own words is that (bear with this thought) the Russian bear died an ignoble death because of communication . . and likely from computers and internet connections, even in the militaristic state they lived .

Once they saw the lifestyles of other people living in a modicum of serenity (they had "Dallas" as a prime example of American decadence and decided they wanted some of what the Ewings had) it was impossible to effectively keep the peasants happy with the "one potato(e) per family schedule . The US outspent the Russians and the Russian economy went bankrupt trying to keep up .

There's no denying that the world is better off with that . . but . . there's a fly in the ointment . . . read on . . . .

The end result was that the US needed a new enemy to keep it's war machine lubed with the oil of commercialism, consumerism and military spending for the war mongers . Now it looks into dark closets and finds spooks and specters that it can demonize and therefor assume evil intentions requiring military interventions . Idle hands and all that . . . . . .

No . . . . PEOPLE are not nice . . . . . however a PERSON can be . But a person with an agenda can find another crone and another, and after a while, there are crone parties all over again .
