| 575664 | 2007-08-04 04:36:00 | I heard a couple of theories, like in some parts of the world the dead get buried after dark so the people who just lost their loved ones final image wouldnt be them being lowered into the ground . And the other one I heard was apparently your skin gets 'clammy' like the dead or something . i cant remember . . . Good guess . . WRONG, but a good guess! OK . . In the days before stethoscopes and actual people with medical abilities, the exact moment of death wasn't for sure . The problem? If they left the dead body above ground . . people thought it'd give them some disease, so they got them into the ground as fast as possible, even if the person was just in a coma . Soooooooooooo . . what they did was install a cord that traveled to the surface from the casket , one end attached to the "dead" person's arm or foot and the other to a bell on a short tower above the gravesite . If the supposedly dead person was indeed alive, the bell would ring and the "graveyard shift" person would hear it and proceed to dig up the not dead person . I guess in the case of people who were disliked or mothers-in-law, the graveyard shift watchman would be conveniently deaf for a fee . This was the first union job . Quite a few caskets that have somehow popped to the surface and had the bodies exhumed have shown torn fingernails and ripped pillows and wood splinters in the fingertips of some of the remains . Hard way to go! Maybe the graveyard shift watchman was on minimum wages . This is the same reason for the "wailing women" in Italian/Greek policy . It wasn't for prayer to get them thru purgatory, but an attempt to awaken them if they were just comatose . This wailing was usually done by professional women who went to the open coffin and "wailed" all night long trying to stir the person back from the netherworld . Another quaint custom was to have the mate . . (wife/husband) or another close relative kiss the dead person lying instate on the lips . :yuck: This was the last chance for the comatose person to bust a move, if you will . Interesting . . huh? |

| 575665 | 2007-08-04 08:28:00 | at bust a move, I know the last kiss is also a means to either do "last chance cpr" from when a lady kissed her husband (who was thought dead but was in a coma) and he woke up. Also it was to take the last of the deceased essence(sp?). All folklore of cause but i love reading about this stuff. |

| 575668 | 2007-08-07 05:29:00 | I am now in need of second hand hardware. My graphics card has just died, so I am looking for a cheap replacement. If anyone has a low spec AGP graphics card with an S-Video output (this is a must) surplus to requirements, can you please PM me? TIA. | roddy_boy (4115) | ||
| 575669 | 2007-08-07 06:14:00 | If the supposedly dead person was indeed alive, the bell would ring and the "graveyard shift" person would hear it and proceed to dig up the not dead person. and if a person was to ring the bell and get dug up then they where "saved by the bell" |
