758313 2009-03-24 22:14:00 He has contacted me through msn and I have discussed your idea

Thanks utopian:thumbs:

He will probably get a cheap 1500 computer and upgrade later, as he wants it to last 3-5 years at least. He will upgrade in 2 years or so

758314 2009-03-25 05:08:00 Ok I agree I shoud get good monitor, keyboard, mouse, speakers and case and get a cheap graphics card.

but what about things like the Motherboard, Ram, Optical Drive, HDD, Modem, power supply and things?
Sir Prospect (14735)
758315 2009-03-25 05:17:00 Get a dual, and upgrade to a quad later. Most of the apps you run don't support multi-threading probs

RAM=Anything by Corsair, GSkill or OCZ is fine

Optical=Asus or liteon

HDD=Seagate or WD

Modem=??? I think you mean a NIC
But mobos have them integrated, you won't need an extra one unless you need gigabit support

PSU=650w Corsair/Antec will provide plenty of room for upgrades, but 500w would be sufficient

Just get the one from CL, all the parts are very good quality

yea, I'd say if a monitor, keyboard, mouse, speakers and case are good quality, you'll replace them only because they have stopped working properly*, not because they have been 'superseded' or replaced with something faster. Eg I've listened to some speakers made in the 80s which give modern hifi systems a run for their money.

It also means any computers you buy in the future will be cheaper because you won't need to replace the monitor, keyboard, mouse etc etc - you'll just carry them over from this computer.

As for motherboard, ram, and all the others, just get what you need. No point getting a cheap graphics card that can't play games if you want the computer for games :). But there isn't much point getting something far above what you require and paying for it - because by the time you actually do need such power, the hardware which provides it in the future will be much cheaper/faster for the same price.

*which is better for the environment :)

*edit: but don't let me talk you out of getting the fast computer you want. As long as it meets your requirements then its good :) My opinion is just something to -consider-

758317 2009-03-26 05:55:00 Thanks Utopian and Blam,

Btw, I'm on a computer that's still on windows 3.0 (Im surprised it still works.)

Ive think ive found one that could possibly suit my needs...
www.qmb.co.nz

But im not exactly sure if thats the best one i can get for the price...

The specs are

Intel Core 2 Quad Processor Q8200 2.33GHz 4MB 1333MHz Quad Core LGA775
ASUS P5QL-PRO (Express Gate), ATX, INTEL LGA775
Corsair XMS 4GB (2GB x2) DDR2-800 XMS PC2 6400
Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 500GB 7200RPM
Samsung SH-S223F SATA 22X DVD-R/+R Dual Layer DVD Writer Black OEM
Asus 9600GT Black Pearl 512MB DDR3 PCI Express 2.0, 2x DVI-I, HDTV-out Thermaltake Aguila VD1430BWS Full Aluminum Middle Tower With 430W Power
Logitech LS21 2.1 speakers
Logitech Deluxe 350 Desktop USB Keyboard & Optical mouse
ViewSonic VX2240W 22" widescreen LCD monitor

758318 2009-03-26 07:20:00 Everything from there is good, although you should ask for QMB to swap the samsung DVD drive for an Asus/Pioneer

And bear in mine Q8200 is not very good for overclocking, but at stock speeds, its still quite fast

What exactly does "overclocking" do?

And why is Asus/Pioneer better than samsung?
Sir Prospect (14735)
758320 2009-03-26 08:03:00 Overclocking is basically when you run a component at higher clock speeds than the manfacturer intended(more clock cycles per second). If you were to get a better overclocking CPU such as the Q6600/Q6700, you'd be able to get much better performance than a Q8200 at stock speeds(Q8200 sucks at overclocking)

Overclocking means you can get the speed of $1200 CPUs for the price of a quarter of that. The graphics card can be overclocked also-the one you're gettting is factory overclocked, so you won't need to worry about that.

Anyways, overclocking means more heat, so with the stock cooler you won't be able to overclock the Q6600 very far, but with a ArcticCooling freezer pro 7 or the TRUE, then you'll be able to get to 3-3.5ghz easy.

Read some tutorials on the web, and if you ever need my help I can come over anytime.

Asus/Pioneer are generally more reliable than samsung from my point of view, and I'm sure most forum members here agree

758321 2009-03-26 08:30:00 Agree with Blam - if you can afford it (and if you can find it) a Q6600 / Q6700 can be made to fly.

Blam - I wouldn't recommend an AC Pro 7 for a Quad - with the smaller fan, they don't have the grunt. I had one, and ended up selling it. The Xiggy SDT-1283 are reasonably priced and work really well though. Not quite up to TRUE standard - but very close and for a lot less $$.

S.P - some things I'd definitely look at changing:
[a] QMB link showed case with included PSU. If you don't know brand of PSU, swap it for decent case (good cooling) and separate PSU. I went with an Antec 300 + a Corsair 520 Modular - not budget cheap, but not OTT either. Quality parts + you can keep upgrading around them. Don't skimp on a PSU - buy quality.
[b] Swap the 2 x 1 Gb Corsair RAM for 2x2 Gb same brand etc. Price diff is negligible, peformance diff is noticeable.
[c] Get yourself a decent keyboard, mouse and speakers. Those ones (even though good brand - logitech) are bottom of the line. You'd end up replacing them eventually - so get something decent. Even the X230's I have aren't fantastic - but they would be miles better than the LS21's.

758322 2009-03-27 03:27:00 Thanks Brooko and Blam.

What type of Keyboard, Mice and speakers should I look for/buy?

And why is cooling important? (because my cpu is running fine at 35 deg.(Intel Celeron 700mhz))
