575252 2007-08-01 23:42:00 Jury service is a civic duty. The rights that we enjoy as members of our society do not exist in isolation - they are balanced against certain duties.

Jury service is one of those duties.

Every so often Judges get a little bit titchy about people avoiding jury service and hand out fines en masse.

They have no proof that you ever received it.

575255 2007-08-02 00:13:00 That & getting married - the only 2 times I've been asked have coincided with those events MushHead (10626)
575256 2007-08-02 01:00:00 I have been called up once, and I would have done it if I wasn't living 4hrs drive away from where the trial was being held. Jury service is an important public duty which keeps society as we know it running smoothly. Unless you have a genuine reason, I'd suggest that you do it. somebody (208)
575257 2007-08-02 01:09:00 If you are self-employed then you don't have to do it either. CYaBro (73)
575258 2007-08-02 01:17:00 I have never been called up, but my wife has been called 7 times, latest last week. She has always been excused for business reasons, but this seems to make a mockery of their random selection process. I'd love to have won Lotto that many times.

Mind you, Mrs T is into competitions and scarcely a week goes by that she doesn't win something. We've had several trips within NZ, 32" LCD TV & surround-sound system, weekends in hotels, a host of books, tapes, DVDs, appliances, umpteen movie tickets, seats at live shows, various services and god knows what else, so maybe this is just another aspect of her winning streak!!

I couldn't win a kick in a street fight, although I did win a camera from PCWorld once (Mrs T posted the entry though, so it doesn't count).

Cheers

575259 2007-08-02 01:23:00 has anyone succesfully got off jury service? If so,what excuse worked for you?

Yes.. The company i work for won't give you time off to server. So you eather take it off as leave or unpaid leave.

This was the reason i gave last time and I was let off..

I like many of you could not afford to take weeks off without pay to do this sort of stuff..

575260 2007-08-02 01:25:00 Ive had to twice and both times my boss wrote a letter to say we are too under staffed and over worked to give our time else where. rob_on_guitar (4196)
575261 2007-08-02 01:42:00 I've done a one week stint in the District Court many years ago when I was an employee of a company - very interesting. Really gives you an insight into how the other half live. But since I've been self-employed (and sole breadwinner), I have just explained this and have been excused. Wouldn't mind doing it again, but would have to be paid what I would normally earn, not the pittance that is currently offered.

I heard there was a study underway investigating ways to make jury service more attractive...
