1436125 2017-06-17 22:26:00 You forget BM knows better than everyone in the entire world. Go back and see how he knows more about any subject ever posted here it must be hard living with that ego

I realise that comprehension isn’t one of your strengths, if indeed you have any, but my post read:

“I'm still trying to get my head around how the hell they could do 24 knots into a 12 knot current with no wind at all.”

Nowhere did I say it couldn’t be done, but I would like an understanding of how.

I look forward to you explaining this phenomena in great detail including how a Windsurfer can do the same.

In your case it certainly is.

1436129 2017-06-17 23:25:00 It's all to do with "wing lift" the same as aircraft. The wing is curved so air flow over the curve side creates a lower air pressure and the under side creates a stronger pressure. This causes the boat to move even in the lightest of airs. It means also that with aircraft it causes lift so even the largest of aircraft are able to lift off! Hence the grinders and/or cyclors creating pressure in the hydraulics to bend the sail to get more lift. Bryan (147)

Its actually quite simple if you have any knowledge of aerodynamics . If you look at the Boats ( or planes as they almost are) their "sails" are no longer called that. They are all referred to as WINGS. That's because they basically are just that.

Now if you know how an airplane wing works, then its really simple. A wing creates lift due to different air pressure above and below the Wing.
Add in the foils, their shape, less surface drag, size, different designs for low to high wind and you basically have a plane.

If you googled it, there are plenty of explanations on how it works,. Since that action on its own doesn't really seem to sink home here you go :p

bfy.tw Happy reading.

In the case of perfectly still air, no wind at all then of course they cant move. So Can you please post an article where it claims with NO WIND these boats are foiling.

Even the slightest amount of wind is enough to make them move. looking forward to the article with NO WIND.

Yes I understand the Aeroplane theory bit Bryan but with these boats there is no engine to propel them forward, and in the case explained, there is no wind for the Sail (Wing) to be of any help .

In every other case I can think of, this situation would leave the boat dead in the water and drifting at the mercy of the currents . (Including Windsurfers, a number of who I have had to rescue over the years in the harbour entrance) .

This leaves us with a couple of ordinary looking hulls with foil appendages and given at 24 knots the hulls are out of the water it seems like the foils can somehow support the weight of the boat plus crew and propel them forward as well .

I wonder if it would sail downwind with the current too and I wonder why such a breakthrough has taken so long to surface???

Remember when considering this proposition that there is no wind, so bending the sail strikes me as a pointless exercise .

Fascinating stuff .

Nah Jimmy Spittle is actually good at what he does, coming back from 8-1 down is one hell of an achievement, no matter the resources behind him.
