1436876 2017-07-04 03:55:00 Just tying to get my head round this Freeview Plus thing.
We currently get freeview via satellite & a Dish TV S7070r Decoder.

Currently to watch TVondemand I have an elderly PC connected to the TV & use a browser to tune in to the appropriate channel.

My question is:
Would there be any advantage of getting a Freeview Plus Decoder.

1436877 2017-07-04 03:58:00 It would mean you can watch the ondemand shows right from the decoder, without having to fire the PC up. if you're going that far, you may as well buy a HDD recorder, something like a Panasonic DMR-HWT260GN wratterus (105)
1436878 2017-07-04 04:02:00 I may be wrong but I think FreeviewPlus only works with Freeview HD via UHF, and not the satellite version. :(

Edit: Looks like I am wrong! They must have got the satellite working with FreeviewPlus as well, as their website says it does work with satellite.

God. I bought one of those things when they first came out. It still stands as the most awesome bit of tech I've ever owned, compared to the VCR.

Not relevant to the thread, just reminiscing.

Freeview Plus needs an internet connection (eg wifi) for some of the cool things it can do
Can record to a USB stick with my Freeveiw+ box . Although cant get many programs on my single USB stick (maybee theres a setting for that ?)

If getting a box/recorder, make sure its Freeveiw certified or theres a chance some features may not work properly
I hardly ever watch TV, but the Plus box is still more usefull than the old boxes , can stream (some/most?) programs from a week ago , even if you forgot to record them .

1436881 2017-07-04 05:02:00 Actually got quite a good HDD Recorder but never use it now.
If I want to record something I just plug a USB stick in the decoder.
We've got the TV hanging on the wall too which is good to watch but had to mount the decoder on top.
Looking at the freeview site they list this model as the base one.

It says it has a inbuilt wifi so it must have some sort of browser pre set to the appropriate sites.

1436882 2017-07-04 05:08:00 I have the next best thing. I have a Chromecast and I can play any On Demand video from my laptop to the TV. It's great and I highly recommend it.

It costs about $60 and plugs into the HDMI slot in your TV. It requires a set up on your computer which is easy enough.

When you want to play from your computer you simply click on the small icon on the top right and within a few seconds it is playing on your TV.

Cheap and simple.

1436883 2017-07-04 06:23:00 Edit - sorry, I didn't even click about the satellite thing - that DVR I recommended won't work if you only get DVB-S freeview, I'm sure there are others around with satellite tuners, probably a lot more basic though. wratterus (105)

I looked into getting one of those but didn't think there would be any gain over my current setup.

1436885 2017-07-05 00:08:00 The only advantage Sky has over Freeview, from what I have seen, is that they have more pathetic channels. Richard (739)
