| 1436256 | 2017-06-04 08:59:00 | I have a Suzuki Swift 2005 1.3 litre. The Electronic power steering warning lamp used to come on from time to time. As the steering was normal I ignored it, but when I took it for a service I asked them to do a data scan but found nothing. A few weeks later the starter was a bit sluggish so I tested the specific gravity of the battery cells and found that one was weak. Installed a new battery and the lamp now stays off all the time when running. What would trigger the EPS lamp if the battery was a bit low? The voltage when running was about 14.5 volts. | mzee (3324) | ||
| 1436257 | 2017-06-05 00:37:00 | What kind of garage serviced the vehicle? What scanner was used - a standard OBD11 Type? If so I doubt it could pull EPS codes. Was a specialist scanner for EPS DTC's used? I mean perhaps a propriety Suzuki EPS scanner may be required, Did the light stay illuminated, at idle and after a short drive, after startup as well? The steering control module (linked to sensors/ECU) may have received low voltage/current - when "polling' at startup, since it needs to calculate ideal current to activate the electric motor when needed.. Hence diagnostic low voltage codes ought to have been stored, as seen here (suzuki4u.co.uk) (Swift 2007). If a direct electric motor is coupled or integrated with the steering mechanism, then ideally sufficient current is required - but if bad battery/insufficient charging present, then the warning light is likely to illuminate under certain conditions. |

| 1436258 | 2017-06-05 05:49:00 | I took it to the main Suzuki dealer after I had used my scanner and found nothing, they serviced it at the same time. I can understand the light coming on with a low voltage, but once the alternator had charged for a while this shouldn't apply. The lamp would stay on at idle as well as at speed. Maybe it uses the initial voltage before running? Since the new battery was fitted the lamp goes out as soon as it starts, and stays out. The EPS lamp can come on if the steering is forced when the car is stationary, also if held at full lock, this is normal to protect the electric motor. Starter cranking speed is much faster than previously. | mzee (3324) | ||
| 1436259 | 2017-06-06 23:35:00 | "Maybe it uses the initial voltage before running" Perhaps so - irrespective if the alternator was charging the battery, it appears that low voltage may have been detected (with ignition on only). At that the light illuminated to indicate that (i.e. when actually driven). So it may have been a pending code situation (www.faultcodereaders.com) - and the light may have come on when driven (to indicate that initial low voltage, as opposed to a live current fault at that instant. But dependent on number of drive cycles, before it clears. Scanners with freeze-frame feature can help pinpoint some issues by capturing parameters ID's if a current (live) fault occurs to analyse later. | kahawai chaser (3545) | ||
| 1436260 | 2017-06-07 00:43:00 | Low voltage can cause any number of weird issues on newer cars. If there is no issue with the steering, the light is no longer coming on and there are no stored codes, I'd think it would be pretty safe to leave it. | wratterus (105) | ||
