758638 2009-03-22 22:59:00 Hi all,

Have been asked to look (briefly) into NZ local offsite backup solutions.

Came across these guys: http://www.securevault.co.nz

Anybody dealt with them? Comments?
Suggestions for anyone else?

I'm half tempted to just setup my own, have this person pay for a Co-lo box and just setup my own backups potentially via FTP or something.

Cheers

Thats basically what I do - I have remote access Via WHS on their Server, or I use teamViewer, and it runs as a service, which also has file transfer - their PC's and server are never turned off, so I simply go in and copy the data from them to me , all data is on the server anyway so its easy - instant backup - that way I know its done

What do you use to actually do the backup?
Do you just copy all the data over the internet every time or do you have some software that does incramentals?

Have you sold WHS to a few businesses?

I have used http://www.nexusdata.co.nz/ in the past and am looking at becoming a reseller but if there is a way we could to the backups ourselves then I think that would be better.

758641 2009-03-23 01:26:00 I used RightByte (www.rightbyte.co.nz) a while back - as a beta tester - and found it quite good. It's fairly basic, but it does the job well. somebody (208)

Heres the Setup - I do off site backups via remote for two places, both are small businesses that work from houses - each has between 4-6 staff .

They both have WHS - and the way its setup - I have built the original PC's so I have images of the drives if needed .

Backing up - There are basically two main folders on the server - 1 has the general day to day stuff, that every ones uses, then in their accounts, they have their own folders which are linked to the users desktops .

Each of the personal folders have permissions so only certain people have access .
The Administrator ( me) :nerd: has full access to every thing .
Next to no data is actually on the Desktop PC's . BUT if there is I can log in Via Team Viewer and copy that too if requested .

When I do back ups I simply Log in Via the remote access, select the Main general Folder and copy it to my own server, same with the Accounts folder - just grab every thing at once .
WHS gives the option of creating an exe or zipped file, I select Zipped as sometimes only certain items may be required - one place the size of the whole lot combined is tiny - only around 500mb . ( excluding the Emails)

I set them going and go do something else for 10 minutes or so - come back and its all done .

The Emails are also backed up separately to each users folder via outlooks backup . ( only just changed that, they were in another folder)

The same thing for Team Viewer if Needed .

Dont do incremental backups - seen to many times stuff ups and not working .

In the event of a PC turning turtle - its a case of fix the PC, and reload the latest backup from the server(1 day old at the most) - OS, Data, Programs the lot - about 20-30 minutes . If the board blew and the new board didn't like the backup, it would be a simple case of repair install and away it goes again (done that once) - all data still safe .

If the server AND PC's went dead all at the same time - bit more work, but install the image I have here, then put back the backed up data and programs .

758644 2009-03-23 09:44:00 Wainuitech, your setup sounds pretty much the same as mine, simple to do and so far so good. Mine is only for personal use though and I havent managed to get my server offsite yet hueybot3000 (3646)
758645 2009-03-23 19:30:00 Yep hueybot3000 Simple as - less things to go wrong .

Seen it several times some people make things so damn complicated they almost build in instability .

What server software are you using - ( re the off site)

758646 2009-03-24 04:38:00 Yeah, have to say though that WHS took a bit of gettin used to, with all its bugs and everything hueybot3000 (3646)
758647 2009-03-24 04:41:00 Power Pack 2 is out today for WHS  CYaBro (73)
