| 578068 | 2007-08-08 03:28:00 | This article was on Fence Post today. When this change comes about, does this mean that all we have to do is rent a line and we can set ourselves up with voip service? Which would not be totally bad news, if that was the case i.e. phone service and internet off the one rental. Or am I just wishful thinking:confused: Anyone have any idea? Warning: Rural Broadband Prices Will Increase Wed 08-Aug-2007 1:36PM A rural broadband specialist says the price of internet services will rise as a result of the Commerce Commission's draft determination for Telecom's copper wire network. The Commission has proposed setting the monthly rental rate which Telecom can charge its rivals to use its phone lines at $16.49 per line in urban areas, but double the price for rural communities, at $32.20. Dr Murray Pearson, from Waikato University, says the price difference will discourage internet service providers from investing in rural areas, which will mean less marketplace competition. And the BayCity Group, a company which provides satellite and wireless broadband, says the difference in price for rural and urban customers could encourage people to move from the country into town. General manager Tony Baird says the farming community should be provided with better broadband, given that it is the major contributor to the country's economy. The Rural Contractors' Federation is also opposed to the different price structure proposed for urban and rural areas. The executive director, Roger Parton, says high-speed internet access is essential for contractors to do their jobs and keep on top of their accounts. He says its unfair that they will have to pay more without seeing any improvement to internet services. |

It's probably where the whole teleco industry is moving towards anyway. Unless you are a rural resident, when all you will get is an extremely expensive POTS (Plain Old Telephony Service) line with no hope of any investment to improve it. |

That sounds like it could be the start of something positive, godfather, for the urban areas and rural areas that currently have a reasonable standard of broadband, anyway . In my situation, I'm about 13 kms from town (exchange) and about 1km from a cabinet exchange and currently get about 1 . 5mbps to 1 . 8mbps broadband downloads . If voip works here I'll definitely be into it (well provided there are no fishhooks - you never know with these telcos) . A bit sad for friends of mine though . They live about another couple of kms further out and their dial-up is pretty hopeless and no chance of getting broadband . Their only hope is satellite as they are tucked into the hills and can't get line of sight for wireless . |

| 578071 | 2007-08-08 04:25:00 | I have a rural house, it has poor dial-up and wireless satellite (2-way) would require moving a hill. Fortunately my main residence has "almost" broadband....(or it was broadband until uncapped). There will be many losers with deregulation of essential industry. All of them are the customers in one form or another. |

Well probably . That comes from naked dsl, not this price news . What thius price news means is that Internet services will cost more if you live in a small town or in the country and less if you live in a large town . , So yeah, you can use VOIP, you will also pay more for internet . The theory behind this is, they'll make more money off rural people therefore they will be more inclined to install equipment there . Some cynical types have said that it will have the opposite affect - sure they make less in big towns, but theres more people and no large infrastructure costs . Guess which theory I believe in . . . . . . |

In the market, one object prevails: profit. With the emphasis on "free", no price fixing, cartels etc., then provided the service is non-essential, deregulation might work. In my case, telephone essential, internet getting that way. |

In the market, one object prevails: profit. As GL says, it is all about PROFIT. See how well the Electric Power industry works. Only the Guvt wins from this cash cow. When we first came to Wanganui from Auckland 4 years ago, a Unit of power was 11 cents. Now it is 21 cents & going up soon. I fail to see how the generating costs have gone up that much. Surely we have paid for the construction of the Dams & Lines by now. If we were told that the increases were to pay for new power stations I could accept that. But that is not the case. Is it?
